The South Bend fish ladder, built in 1987, is the fourth in a series of fish ladders built on the St. Joseph River to allow trout and salmon to migrate 55 miles from Lake Michigan to this point. It is part of a cooperative fish management project between teh States of Michigan and Indiana to provide passage for these fish up the St. Joseph River. Funds to build this ladder were provided by the State of Indiana and by the Anadramous Fish Gran Program administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
