This is the main street of Fredericksburg, VA, shown here just as the sun rose over the buildings behind me to light up the shops. These shops are all three storeys with apartments for rent on the 2nd and (sometimes) 3rd floors. The cars could belong to the store owners or to the apartment dwellers. This section of town was reduced to rubble by a combination of Union cannon and the resultant fire on December 13, 1862 in the Battle of Fredericksburg. Although some buildings built in the 1700's survived the battle, these do not date back any earlier than 1870. The proprietor of the "Spirits" shop across the street had just put out the tables and chairs...and I was just wondering what Spirits he might be serving for breakfast... when I got sidetracked into a conversation with the owner of the building behind me. I hope you like this glimpse of a small city waking up on a summer morning!

I like the shadows that the morning sun has added to your very nice town, the red toy store really stands out!

It's the shadows the leaves cast on the building that brings this shot to life.

This is a great looking shot, Sharon. I love how the toy store just pops out at you, and the light and shadows are perfect. Did you use a touch of HDR here? Very nice. Interesting about the Civil War battle.

To answer Jimbob... no hdr in this shot. This is one of my first attempts with my new wide-angle lens...I was mainly shooting a city street to test the limits. It is also one of my first shots done in RAW. I still don't quite know what the RAW sliders do in PhotoShop. (If someone can enlighten me, please do ...and thanks!) I have discovered that preliminary processing of RAW files works wonders. And, yeah, I picked this spot on the street because (a) it had the red store and (b) it had the red store...and maybe (c) it had the red store! :) Thanks all for your comments; I'll contact you individually later.

Lovely city scape. I love the morning lighting on the shops and trees. A fascinating narrative of the history there. I think you are managing your new lens and processing very well! Thank you for sharing this slice of life.
