I rarely ever carry a big zoom, when out with my dog, as it's rather clumsy, in the terrain we frequent. This early Spring day, we were still on a gravel lane, and heard a twig snap, in the woods, just to the right of us. I walked backwards about twenty feet, to a power line swath, that cut through the woods, and there was this young buck, perfectly still, watching our every move. I just told Zule to sit, and stay, and he patiently complied, while I fired off a number of shots. I was shooting with a digital Rebel and a 480mm lens, full out, and was getting camera movement, , so I tried to move in closer, where there was a hydro pole for support. The buck even took a few steps towards me, and I managed another few shots, this being one. When I tried climbing the rocks around the base of the pole, it finally spooked him, and he jumped into the woods.

Doug, I simply love the bright colours and swiftness in the air.
BTW your story is fascinating !!! But I almost accused you of being cruel criminal killer before I reached the end !!! LOL
Zulu must have been an angel to obey your command to sit when seeing a wild animal ...
Boris would never listen to me but run like hell - to the same effect LOL

This is great. I love the lighting here...brings out the features of the buck. I can even tell his antlers still are covered with velvet. Praise to your dog also for being very still. Excellent work.
