I was thrilled to spot this little guy. At first when looking at him from behind, I thought he was a bee. These little guys are very hard to spot, and are just as fast if not faster than a hummingbird.
I did not get any pics. of one last year, so this was a thrill for me. I used the 100mm macro lens, as I did not have time change to lens, and did a fair amount of cropping. It is the only usuable capture that I got of him.
There are more than 1,200 species of these moths worldwide, and roughly 125 of them can be seen regularly in North America. Also called hawk moths, sphinx moths, clearwing moths and bee-hawk moths, and in the caterpillar stage, they are called hornworms.
These guys you have to really look for, and they are more apt to be out and about on a warm sunny day. Thank you for commenting, I do appreciate it.
