I'm lucky enough to have a pair of these Spur Winged Plovers nesting nearby. They have a spur on each wing which they use to strike intruders. This year they seem to be quite tolerant of people but they send dogs packing quick smart.

Very interesting bird and well captured. The spur is quite colorful...I hope they give warning before they attack;-)

Oh yes they do Darryl, a penetrating repeated call that gets louder and more insistent as they approach.

These are quite common around Brisbane. The chicks are especially cute, just two fluffy popoms on ludicrously skinny legs. I do worry about their survival rate but maybe if the parents can see off a dog they can protect the young ones from cats too.

Amazing image. I can't imagine how you ever got close enough to photograph this beautiful bird. Good composition with a very nondescript background that doesn't detract from the main subject which of course the bird. 10 in my book. I’d like to see more of your local fauna.
