I’m no expert about these dragonflies. He seems to be surveying his airspace and makes regular sorties to drive off any intruders. After each sortie he returns to his post. Quite fascinating to watch.
Like an airplane coming in reverse for a landing! I've never seen a shot with the wings in this positon. GREAT detail and composition. I, too, am facinated by these creatures.

I have seen many a dragonfly (harmles beauties) but I've never seen one with this intense, gorgeous red. The clarity is superb Robert and I have to ditto Alexis in that the wing position capture is unique to my eyes.
But words are things, and a small drop of ink, falling, like dew, upon a thought produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions think and smile.
Art is everywhere, except it has to pass through a creative mind.
Lovely contrast with the background. Beautiful view of some of the wings' veins. Good to see the wings can also have another position than the one classically shown in books. Wonder if there is something like a wider focus for that kind of shot.
These dragonflies are common around your parts? Ooooh, want one ... or two ... ah heck, a whole hatch, yes! :)
Hey, excelent shot, Robert. I go after these guys occasionally, and I know how hard it can be to get a clear shot, even when they keep coming back to the same perch. (My wife who was a field biologist says dragonflies can be territorial, especially when laying eggs.) Anyhow, I marvel at the clarity and detail you captured, and of course at the color of this beastie. What lens / camera did you use?
These hummers are as old as the dinosaurs (and survived a tad longer). They capture prey and eat it in the air. Lay eggs under leaves and such in water. In Utah, one type hovers near the ground, another about 6 ft and a third type controls air space at about 12 feet. Had to download this shot. It's a beauty. Keep up the good work.
The Inspiration comes from within!! am just a fanatic of good captured moment of the day:)
This is just a one way to leave something beyond ourself!! We are just a mesengers of our nature hand!!! http://endlesshorizont.tripod.com/sin/
I hold it true that thoughts are things; They're endowed with bodies, breath and wings:
And that we send them forth to fill the world with good results, or ill.
That which we call our secret thought speeds forth to earth's remotest spot, leaving it's blessings or it's woes like tracks behind it as it goes.
We build our future, thought by thought for good or for ill, yet know it not.
Yet so the universe was wrought .
Thought is another name for fate.
Choose then thy destiny and wait, for Love brings Love and Hate brings Hate. - Henry Van Dyke.
I have an image very similar..LOL I'd swear he is on the same stick ;-)
georgeous capture Robert
I too enjoyed the information other people have supplied on dragonflys. Thanks for the entertaining and informative read to accompany a lovely image.

Good shot Robert! Here, we have a dragonflies too, but they're not red like this, they are more darker red or they're rather blue. Yours are so beautiful!
Dragonflies are my fave subject and you captured this one perfectly Robert. I'm only really familiar with European species so can't help with an ID; but if it helps there is a field guide to Australian odonata due to be published shortly. That should help you put a name to this little beauty. In the meantime he's sat on my desktop:)
