I used what is called a variable focus in my new camera for this shot. The main focus moves to your chosen spot, in this case the bleeding heart branch hogging the sun, and the remainder of the shot shifts to what is called "easy" focus. Appears to me it's a combination of soft focus and sharp focus. I would love some honest comments and criticisms on this since the concept is new to me. Thanks.

Hi Kathy!

First: aaawwwwww... was my reaction so as I open your page, beautiful and so cute composition!

Second: when I put in bigger size I percieved something diferent, but was not very clear at the first moment, than I came back to read you and yes I agree about a combination of diferent focus and is perfect the title "spotlight". Good exercise.

Kathy - In candor, I am finding the foreground leaves to be distracting. Perhaps the angle of lighting, which is excellent, is contributing to this. Thad

Hi, Kathy...

I want to be perfectly frank and honest when I say that you should send your camera and all related equipment to me for my birthday. Here I am fooling around with this $90 Olympus and you have a camera with variable focus. That's just not fair.

This almost looks like a 3D image to me. You've created a feeling of real depth here. I agree with Thad that some pruners could have been used to take out the foreground leaves, but that's only a minor problem with this amazing shot. Except for the foreground foliage, this shot is just about perfect.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I would love to see some of your other work besides flowers. You are the master of flowers. I'll bet you could use your variable focus on a still life. Just a thought.

Great job,

Roger

Well, the bleeding hearts look sharper than the rest, but I'm not quite sure if I like it or not Kathy. Maybe if the flowers were in the center more so the sharpness was centered with the softness around it. Do you get what I mean? I hope so, cause I'm not sure!...lol

I agree with Joanie. I think the more focused part should be more to the right, although maybe not in the center, Still, it's a nice colorful foofy shot.

Kathy, I don't clearly understand the variable focus, but I do agree with what has been said before me. I too, think that the focus should be more central. But, everything from the details, lighting and colours are all superb! I love these dainty little flowers and your framing is also lovely!
