A bronze statue called "Against All Odds," created by Edwin Bogucki, stands on a balcony overlooking the paddock at Arlington Park. It commemorates one of John Henry's most famous finishes. 1981 was the inaugural Arlington Million and two horses, John Henry and an Irish 5 year-old named The Bart, finished side by side. Although it initially appeared that The Bart had won, John Henry was a nose ahead in the photo. Despite a less than first class pedigree and despite his age John Henry became a very accomplished race horse winning 7 Eclipse Awards. I wanted to present different angles of this beautiful bronze sculpture which is life sized. The third picture, in particular, shows the incredible detail work in this artwork even the texture of the shadow roll. The outside horse is John Henry and the inside horse is The Bart. My husband and I were fortunate to see John Henry up close after his retirement in 1985 to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington Kentucky.

One of those J. Henry statues (don't know if these are the ones) survived the great fire that took down the old grandstand on July 31, 1985...I lived about ten minutes away from Arlington Park @ that time...The smoke darkened the immediate sky, and you could smell it...

Nice presentation...Faved...

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

I love this Kathy . I was and am a big John Henry fan. He was one of the greatest of all time . I like you and your Husband visited him at KY Horse Park many times.
When I was showing in the Park , I would take him peppermint candies.... he loved peppermint. Shortly after his death several of us horse girls went to visit his grave and I will admit I sat there and cried my eyes out . I left him a bag of peppermint candies . Truly a legend one we will never see the likes of again .
Great Tribute to this outstanding Horse .
