The Bannack jail was built of 8-10inch logs. But jails were seldom used because offenders were either warned , told to get out of town, or hung. And no one wanted the job of guarding prisoners. It would take the people away from working their gold claims. Inside the jail there are still metal rings with chains where prisoners would be 'hooked up.'Henry Plummer became sheriff in 1863, he was a vigilante with quite a past! He had the jail built. And even tho he was an outlaw, he never spent time in that jail either, instead he was eventually taken directly to the gallows and hung!(someday I hope to do a website all about those gold panning days at Bannack)

Fascinating history of a jail that was seldom used. I like the contrasts. Is that grasses growing on the roof?

Another great one, did Bonnie and Clyde ever spend a night there? JUst think of the stories that came out of this little jail. Love this series of yours.

Not much to add except that I like it a lot. The sepia really adds to the era feel. Looks like it's not going to hold too many bad guys now days. Great job.

Whoa... the sheriff was an outlaw who was eventually hanged?? Tough stuff out yonder! I suspect one would need to be a pretty tough customer to make a go of it... Love this series, Ms. V!

Guess being booked into this jail was better than the alternative, Hanging. Thanks V, for giving me the curiosity to Google Bannack. Extremely interesting history.

Looks like some one broke out! Probably a ghost bandit on the loose. Very nice, V.
