Kinda hard to tell this time of year, with all the young birds just getting their colors, however ... I'd call this a Pine Grossbeak (a large finch) Size, when mature, about 8". This is likely an immature male. But what do I know.

Great image, the detail is fantastic. He is dead on a Pine Grosbeak according to the Sibley manual. Unless you live way up north or a few of the western states, it is considered a rare sighting.

Nice shot. This definitely is not a pine grosbeak. Most likely it is a male common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) or at least a very close relative.
