Just some experimenting in photoshop. I took a scanned image of some text, gave it a sweet motion blur. Then I inverted the color (Text black -> white, background white ->black. very simple Ctrl+I). Put a color gradient on top of that layer, changed the blending to overlay. Then I made a new layer, did a gaussian blur and erased the gaussian blur around the top to give the bottom that nice glow.
