Some software updates

Submitted by caedes 07/22/04 2:07 AM GMT

I've made a few software updates tonight. Most of them are bug fixes, how the comments system now has an "overflow" mode for threads which contain too many comments to easily display. For an example see Joost's profile page. I've also updated the software on the dev site to make password logins more secure, so if you could go over there and test the logging in and out that would be great. Thanks.

I like the new overflow mode, should be particularly helpful for people on dial-up. Only suggestion I would make is to chop it even more. As long as it's going to be truncated it might as well be cut down to just the most recent 30 posts or so. Anyone who wants to read back further can simply click on view to get the full list. Well, that's just my opinion. I also tried out the login on the dev site and didn't seem to have any problems with it...

Great idea with the overflow mode, but when I click on 'View,' nothing happens. It basically refreshes the page; it doesn't add on the 'overflow' comments.

I'm using whatever the latest edition of Internet Explorer is if that might be helpful. (I'm not computer savvy, so please pardon.) :>

hmm, it looks to be adding all of the comments when I click on view, but I have only tried it out in my own profile.

Good work -- I was going to reccomend that very thing if you didn't do it soon, but you did, so cool. Might I reccomend paging the comments like you do the images, so that (for example) in Joost's profile, when you click "View" you still don't have to wait forever and a day to see them all. But a good fix, that was very annoying to me. Thanks!

Logging in/out works fine in dev site.

Wow, I never knew exactly how many comments where on your profile page (Johanna). I figured there were a lot, but I probably wouldn't have guessed over 1,600.

Yes, the overflow script looks fine - a good addition. How does it work - does it automatically cut off any extra than 'x' images? How often will it update - every time the page loads?

It only shows the most recent 100 comments by default. When you click on "View" it sets a cookie that tells it to show all the comments for the next few minutes. Then it goes back to overflow mode. If you don't allow it to set the cookie then it won't work.

Great addition, also like Torque's idea of just the most recent 30 posts

I don't like his idea of the latest 30. I don't like needing to flip through more pages than I need to. I do like the overflow update though.

I don't know if this is a bug, but i can only post one image in 24 hours. I think members can post two or has that been changed. I can't log in on the outher site. Thanks. Dwight

not sure if this is the right place, but i think it would be very helpful to have the list of images on the "caedes control" numbered, because i find myself sitting here counting the images once in a while to see if any were deleted... i think this would make it a lot easier.
