Artist Spotlight #41

Submitted by mimi 07/03/09 4:41 AM GMT

As we enter full summer in the northern hemisphere and mid-winter in the southern, we welcome our next artist to be spotlighted. I give you boremachine known as Chris to his friends.
Please visit his gallery and peruse his varied images.

Hello friends!

When I read Mimi's PM I was excited and shocked both. Over the past weeks I was pretty busy and didn't visit Caedes regularly, therefore I read the PM three days late.

About me:
My name is Christian Hauer, I'm getting 42 this July 20th and I live in Vienna, the capital of Austria with my wife Sabine (aka Blumie).

About equipment:
For the last two years I use a Canon EOS 400D, which is also known as Digital Rebel XTi in North America and EOS Kiss Digital X in Japan. The first year I used the kit lens 18-55mm (w/o IS) and a Canon 75-300 mm USM III zoom lens. A year ago I invested in a replacement for the kit lens and got a second hand Sigma 17-70mm which was advised by two of my best Caedes friends. This spring I wanted to shoot wide angle and got another Sigma, a 10-20mm which I really like. This was also advised by a friend (thank you). I also have an external flash unit (2nd hand Canon Speedlite 420EX) and of course a lightweight but quite stable tripod from Manfrotto. I'm fancy getting a new camera, but I don't know which one it could be. I read lots of stuff about those new full frame DSLR's.... still unable to decide if that big step is necessary for me.

About photography:
I came to this hobby very slowly like buying the first 2MP camera (Fujifilm FinePix 2600 Zoom instead of the 2800 zoom which I wanted more but wasn't available) for snapping, After that I bought a 'real' zoom (10x) camera, a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z2 which I really liked, at first. After some thousands of shots the Z2 started to suck batteries empty after about 200 shots (with viewfinder), about 100 with LCD on. With that camera I even got to Caedes permanent galleries (panem et circenses). Then I was looking for a better one which still was affordable and so I came to the Konica Minolta DiMAGE A200 (8MP), which is called 'SLR-like' but much smaller. With this one I was able to make those wonderful night shots of Vienna some might still remember. One of my favourite shots with the A200 is 'Sunken Crate' which was pretty successful at Caedes. The next step for me was animal photography, which is best practiced at the zoo. There I found out, that the A200 is very pretty slow. So I wanted a new camera that led me to my Canon.

About Caedes:
I think this is a quite funny story. When Sabine and I planned a trip to wonderful Prague for the fifth time, I was looking for some thing we haven't seen before. Best place for that was Google Earth. There I found the Jewish cemetery with lots of information and photos. One of them led me to Caedes.net. Being here the first time was a nice feeling and the registration, which I normally hate to do, was no pain at all. That was late October 2006. There is no other community I am active and I guess there won't be another one because here on Caedes I have all I need.

About my photos:
By far my favourite shot on Caedes I ever posted is 'Tiger [rework]'. It also has the highest c-index of all my shots. Unfortunately it didn't make it to the permanent galleries. As I wrote above at the beginning about myself, this July is my birthday and there could be no better present than this nomination for AOM. Thanks to all who believe in me (some more than I do) and thanks to all who gave me a new home here at caedes. :o)

Hey Chris! I was sure you should be nominated one day!
As a gift, I unarchived your 'Tiger [rework]' and moved it into the 'Rework' gallery. Sur it is a beautiful work. Maybe it was archived because you didn't post it into the 'Rework' gallery. Who knows...
