While photographing a large group of geese, landing on lake ice, I took a break to capture this view of a dead tree branch, seemingly frozen in a struggle against the confines of winter. I was struck by the subtle shapes of the water as it froze in a curving line against the branches and shallows, and the smooth gradation of blues and whites. It may likely not get many comments, like my two previous goose photos, but it's one of my personal favorites, so descriptive of winter in my native North Dakota. 12.20-8 Currently it is one of only three photos I have printed large and framed, creating a triptych of our travel images on my dining room wall. 8
