That short tower of rough material beside the feeder is a fabricated "corn cob", made of crushed and compacted dry corn, and skewered on a cob spike. Like the suet boxes, this type of food requires persistence and a strong beak. A pair of Blue Jays, however, like to frequent my son's feeders when there's nuts to be had, particularly peanuts. This fella had just landed here, seemingly counting the peanuts to see if he needed to carry off two or three, to make it worth his while. If the peanuts offered are in the shell, the Jays will jam the nut into deep crevasses in the tree bark and then peck it to pieces to reach the meat inside. 4
