This image shows the tiny ancient town of Veere, Zeeland, The Netherlands, partly hidden behind its medieaval fortification. The fortification was made by digging out the moat. Veere hasn't changed that much since the 15th and 16th century. Therefore I suppose that the present view is rather similar to the one that people have seen a couple of hundred years ago.
