This airplane is the Boeing/Stearman N2S-3, developed in 1934. Since then 8,400 of them were built for the US Air Force and the US Navy as a primary trainer. More than half of all the American WWII pilots have started their career on such a plane. The former US president George H.W. Bush (Sr.) has achieved his pilot license on a N2S-3.

The depicted one, taken yesterday (August 6th, 2016) in the air near Zeeland Airport, The Netherlands, is the N74650 (US Navy 586) and was built in 1943. Because of its colors, it got the nickname 'Yellow Peril'.
