The German offshore support vessel 'Innovation' (IMO: 9603453) was built in 2012 (please check-out the above link for detailed information about this vessel).

It's used now for the construction of offshore wind turbines in the North Sea. The advantage of this vessel is that it's able to elevate herself on four 'legs' (such a vessel is called a jack-up vessel too). By checking-out the above link, one can see clearly, by some of the provided images, the principle how such a ship is functioning.

In the storm season the construction of offshore wind turbines was often dangerous or impossible because the work was hampered by the high swells which struck the involved ships and their crew. In such severe weather conditions the ship hoists herself on her four 'legs' now, so creating a stable, swell independent work platform.
