The main naval base of The Netherlands was created in the nineteenth century in Den Helder.

In the most northern part of the Dutch province of North Holland, a simple keel place for naval ships was built around 1800. In the following decades, a navy establishment with docks and various warehouses and workshops arose there.

During the nineteenth century, the initial shipyard grew into a large naval complex with a hospital, naval barracks and midshipmen training institute. The latter got the name 'Royal Netherlands Navy institute'.

Depicted is a part of this Royal Netherlands Navy institute.
