At the end of the 19th century (1895 - 1898) the railway line in the vicinity of the Central Station in Antwerp, Belgium, was raised with the intention that train traffic wouldn't interfere with normal urban traffic.

This photograph, which was taken near the Central Station, shows that the elevation wasn't only functional, but that considerable attention and money was spent on the architectural aspect too. For example, the retaining walls are crowned with turrets in neo-Romanesque style. The sloping surfaces under the arches are decorated with various motifs.

In 1994, this section of the railway became a protected monument.
