Gdansk is an historically important seaport, founded in the Pomeranian region of Poland in medieval times more than 1000 years ago.
More recently, the shipyards of Gdansk gained notoriety as the home of the Solidarity movement that led to the labor coalition government that replaced the former communist regime.
