Girdwood is about 40 miles from Anchorage and is a great destination year-round. I was there in late summer and took the tram to the top. Lots of people were riding bicycles down the trails, paragliding down the mountain, or just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. A couple even got married on top of the mountain and needed witnesses for the event as they only brought the minister and a ukulele player for the music.
