These are the blooms on the white birch tree outside my terrace. I also posted a picture last year taken on April 10 - this year May 6 - that's how late spring has been. Here's some info: "Elongated cluster of single-sex flowers bearing scaly bracts and usually lacking petals. Many trees bear catkins, including willows, birches, and oaks. Wind carries pollen from male to female catkins" - Encyclopedia Brittanica
