There have of late been quite a few image uploads that have been rejected for falling into the ‘copyrighted material, screenshots of games, frames from a movie or television show’ section of the sites code of conduct. Whilst some have may slipped through the net, this isn’t necessarily a sanction to upload such material. If you have uploaded an image that falls into this category and you were curious as to why it wasn’t accepted - this is why. New members or existing members, who are unfamiliar with it, should check the Code of Conduct if they are unsure as to whether or not their image is ok to upload. Thanks.
Please God, give me a button to the the ejection seat underneath NoahNott ... if you do this for me I will not ask for anything else .. untill the next time.

New members uploading should also familiarise themselves with the snapshot policy on photos as well posting copyrighted material which will be rejected if it isnt made clear as to the source of ownership.
This comment should be understood as a query rather than an attempt to disguise a criticism as a question. That is, it really is a question.
The policy mentions not uploading photographs of one's friends or one's pets. I understand the first, but I wasn't sure about the motivation for the second. Why would it be all right to photograph a wild animal, say, but not one's cat? Although I don't currently have a website, when I did I did include a photograph of my cat and I never thought of this as problematic. What am I missing?
I'm tempted to ask something further, but will resist lest this thread return to its tangential state.
I submited a pic that may or may not be rejected. Are fonts allowed? The site i got it from didnt have a copyright thing, or anything...so i assumed it was ok of me to use it, even though we all know where THEY got the REAL font. =P

But thats like replicating the font right? So that's not me right?

So does that one line near the beginning give me permission to use it? ...or is it that 1am late night syndrome catching up to me?
To go back to margali's question . You are going to be alright if you post an artistic shot of your cat. I think they are trying to get away from people posting a picture of their cat that looks exactly the same as everyoher cat shot. Does that make sence?
i think it does... i think the problem lies not so much with it being A cat, or YOUR cat per se, but the setting of the image. huge lion, tiger, or bear (oh my) that some people hardly ever, or never get to see: WOW ... housecat lying around...in a house YAWN... hope this helps...
That helps. Thank you. I think I missed the point partly because there are independent reasons I would not post pictures of friends (without consent which would be very hard to monitor) which don't apply in the same way to pets (since I typically consent to things on my cat's behalf). The other part is just that I'm such a poor photographer that I can't imagine any of my shots counting as artistic, so pictures of my cat are really no less interesting than my picture of Niagra Falls in winter, say. Fortunately, I can still enjoy the products everyone else produces here.
The snapshot policy really has more to with the intent of the photographer than the result. What we are trying to avoid are photos which the person has put no effort or thought into creating. Nobody will mind if you upload something that you might not consider up to par because a big part of caedes is offering advice to try to help people improve. As long as you can take some constructive criticism then there's no reason to hold back.
To add to what Sam (samatar) said, i'm sure the list of people who walked in the door here, are much better photographers for having done so. I'm on that list... part of what helps you become better is the help, guidance, and yes, criticism of others. So maybe you should reconsider and try posting something.
I'd actually be more likely to post an abstract desktop. I'm no better at those, but I've recently become very interested and have been playing around a lot with different software and so on. I'm just not sure given the standard of most of the images here that this would be at all wise! I tried following one or two of the tutorials, but they are hard to follow if you don't have exactly the right software.
I'm also not sure how to tell if something is abstract>fractal or computer>digital. Is there any guidance on this? I realise there are many clear cases, but what about, say, manipulated fractals or fractalised forms of other digital images?
Most of the members here had no idea how to do fractals either, thats how I started by looking at everyone elses work, then downloading the program and asking members questions, advice, tips etc... and I still pester people for tips.. lol.. so my advice is TRY IT, EXPERIMENT and POST IT.. =D
i do so know how to do a fractal... someone gimme a crayon... i'll show ya :P
*all kidding aside, i saw a piece of one of the programs for a fractal (i think) and was lost immediately... so kudos to those who've mastered them...ok, i'm done being serious :o)
you're safe .. not only are you safe, but others will prolly steal it
so .. perhaps not so safe after all
RE: the snapshot policy .... the longer you hang around the more you will realize that nobody seems to read about the SS policy ... because, afterall, we certainly can't be talking about THEIR photography ... it's for the other people that are just learning
'Once an image has been uploaded to the site it should not be uploaded again unless substantial changes have been made to it. These changes should be enough so that it could be reasonable assumed that the resulting changed image would receive a better critique than the previous version. '
is perhaps another rule new members should familiarise themselves with too.....
Guilty as charged on that one. A recent upload did not translate as well as I thought and I hit the panic button and deleted, then reuploaded a 'brighter' version.
I certainly understand your point Phil ... hopefully ... hopefully after a couple of uploads the members have a reasonable expectation of how things 'look' once up on the site.
Recompression issues of certain file formats, for an example, might be something to address and perhaps, emphasized in the FAQ's. Or ... a declaration and reiteration of what you just make mention of ... as well as expanding the info on the actual upload page might be helpful ... or a deterent to SS's. :oP
I say .. we create an upload page preamble that has to be clicked thru .. in a perfect world, it would contain algebra equations cleverly weaved into its verbage, so as to guarantee reading, comprehending, crying and remorse for a youth misspent
Methinks… Phil is referring to works that have been around for a few days… and then reuploaded w/only minor changes that do not significantly alter the overall effect of the image.
You know… like taking that snapshot of your dog hanging off the newel post and increasing the contrast 5%… don't reupload unless you've added some drool effects too. 8•P
Question. What about titles? For example, what if we name something that is a reference to a TV show, but the image is completely our own work and does not violate copyright at all? I have a fractal that I named after a Babylon 5 character and was inspired by it, but there's nothing copyrighted in the image at all.
