I'd just like to take a moment to encourage people to vote for a number of reasons. First of all, *caedes… the man behind this site likes statistics, so it's highly unlikely the c-index is going to go away. Second, the voting booth was created to stop people being able to freely manipulate the system, and I think trying to find ways to circumvent the booth is a copout. Do we like all the scores coming out of the booth? No. But, here's my 3rd point, I think this is in large part due to people NOT VOTING.
I've seen numerous arguments for reasons why people don't want to vote, but are concerned about the scores they or others are getting. No system works properly if people don't use it. Most especially I'd like to encourage the people who have paid for memberships, and are most likely therefore to care about this site, to get in there and vote. Please do not expect immediate results.
It will take patience and an actual dedication on all of our parts for it to reflect our views. I do think certain things (like separating cg/abstract art from photography) should be adjusted to allow for people who don't seem to have the care and consideration to fairly rate a style of art they are unfamiliar with or don't like. That being said however, I think the booth is a valid and really nice concept. I find stuff in there that I might not see sometimes otherwise. But again... it will never function correctly and reflect our views as a community if we choose to ignore it.
And ultimately... this is my last reason… because I do not think it was ever really given a proper chance by most of the membership, and I am sick and tired of the constant debates. It makes my experience here poorer, and I'm getting to the point where I used to enjoy coming on the threads, and goofing off and being helpful… and now it's almost a chore. If I feel that, just imagine how the man (and the rest of the moderators and everyone else who puts so much into this site) feels.
*clap... clap... clap... well said Kat... I sit here and have a little giggle when I read how "i'm not voting because I dont like it... i dont understand how its created... I dont know what i'm looking at so I wont vote.. or I give 0's or 1's.. " then in their next sentance it's "my c-index is so low.. its unfair.. blah blah.." maybe.. just maybe others are thinking and voting the same as them.. therefore what goes around comes around.. =) so as the old saying goes.. do unto others.. ;)
I agree too it seems that every thread no matter what its about.. even when its just senseless fun.. someone some how always mentions it and then the whole debate starts over again.. your right the threads used to be fun, a good way to relax but now its not...
Seriously, thanks for putting in the effort, I'd just like others to know that it's not necessary to go for the maximum goal… 5-10 votes a day will make a difference over time, and shouldn't be too onerous to people who don't have great chunks of time in the day to dedicate 8•)
Well, I do still vote. Not as regularily as I use to, but I still do. So, yeah, I'll take you up on that Cat. If not only to help counteract the people who are voting for the wrong reasons.
I always try to balance the light with the heavy - a few tears of human spirit in with the sequins and the fringes ~

Voting for 'fun' is the lowest form of pleasure - I would have thought (but maybe you've all sampled lower). Considered, careful voting, fine. I, for one, am not going to post - for some time. When this farce has been sorted out, then I may join the happy(?) throng again.
i forgot to vote the past few days...actually I was too lazy. I had to read the forums first, then I vote...the latter of which I was too busy doing my 7 hours of homework yesterday!!!!
...to the little kids reading this: don't procrastinate.
I was going to complain that I don't care for the fractal images in the new Voting Booth...then I put on some Grateful Dead and now they are getting 'high' marks indeed !
; )
Is it not possible to have fun doing something serious? I would have thought so.
Those who vote irresponsibly probably have fun as well.
I have been away a few days and am suffering from 'voting withdrawal symptoms' I kept looking at people/things/scenes and mentally giving them a score. As long as I avoided all mirrors it was a good alternative :) Like most things though, not as good as the real thing :)
With no voting system I would imaging the whole concept of caedes would change and it would become just one enormous on-line photo album - no fun at all in that :)
I LIKE getting high scores, I laugh (now that I've learnt not to cry) when I get low scores. Nothing like a dive-bombing picture to bring one back to reality. Not that I always agree with them of course . . . . . . . lol
