Repeat uploading reminders.

There are several images seemingly doing the rounds at the moment that keep getting pulled by their artists and re-uploaded for no apparent reason – presumably to have another bash at the voting booth. Apart from being against the sites rules this is ultimately a pointless exercise as chances are it will receive a worse score as people will become tired of seeing the same shot appearing in the VB and you will end up getting an apathy driven score. Members are reminded that the sites policy on submitting the same image is:

‘Once an image has been uploaded to the site it should not be uploaded again unless substantial changes have been made to it. These changes should be enough so that it could be reasonable assumed that the resulting changed image would receive a better critique than the previous version.’

If you upload an image that you have altered yourself in line with this direction, remember to replace the original in your gallery with the new one either under the same section or manipulation NOT the rework gallery which is for pieces that have been taken and altered by a different member. Each gallery has a heading describing it’s intent, the rework gallery definition is:

‘This gallery contains caedes.net images that have been modified or improved in some manner by another member. If you plan to submit an image to the Rework Gallery, please ensure you first obtain the original author's permission.’

Similarly, images that have been rejected for whatever reason should not be resubmitted in the hope that someone else will let it through in a moment of weakness/apathy. If you have received a rejection notification and you disagree with it, you can PM a mod and ask them as to the reasons why rather than creating forum threads querying it, as members will not be able to view the image anyway to offer a rationale.

Thanks.

thanks for the note on uploading and reworking., phil. i do upload pictures, take them down and upload again. here's the deal. when i work on a photo in PS and complete my editing, i find that the uploaded result looks entirely different when on the website than it did while i edited. it's frequently much darker and flatter. that's why i withdraw it and "tune it to the website". i don't know why this is so and also don't know what else to do. as far as the rework thing....i guess i haven't read the rules because i truly didn't know it meant for someone else to do the re-editing. so thanks for the info.

you could try calibrating your screen either with a software tweak or a hardware calibrator like a Huey; and ensuring that you use an sRGB profile on your images as most displays use this as opposed to AdobeRGB that is better suited to physical printing.

The culprit is very likely the color profile Phil mentions. The site resaves the images to post them @ various sizes, and the automated script that does this uses the "sRGB Profile". The main reason for using this profile is that it's a shorter color spectrum which is compatible with just about even the cheapest color monitor out there.

To keep your colors from flattening out like a cheap air mattress, in whatever program you're using find where you can "Convert to Profile" or whatever similar option is available before you save and upload. You may want to keep your original image in Adobe RGB as it has a wider range of colors that you want to preserve for other purposes.

Thanks for the reminder Phil. I did the same thing once, pulled an image & re-uploaded it after I played with the color. Thanks also to you & Cat for the tips.

If, for a minute, I thought it would be the worth the effort then yes, I would – reality, it seems, begs to differ more often than not.

I've jsut had a problem with uploading. The problem might as well latch itself onto this thread.

I've attempted to upload an image a number of times, the upload seems fine until it gets to the success screen. The caedes frame is visible but the confirmation text of appearing in the 'new images' gallery isn't present. The image never appears in the gallery or in my caedes control section either. Helpeth would be greatly appreciated!

ah the great white success screen malarkey - I think it's a server time out issue if the file size is large and takes a long time to send. how big is it?

I think it was Steve 'the woz' Wozniak, that said "In 1971, you could buy 12KB of memory for the same amount of money that it cost to put a down payment on a house ... I opted for the memory

1) .. we need to return to the days of 'the woz' and buy houses for $2

2) .. we need to return to the humble days of respecting what 12KB can do for you

3) .. I dredged all of this up from memory .. so shoot me if the numbers are off .. not to mention the names ... and the words

And after all that I changed my mind about the image anyway. enjoy a different one!

Then again, after comparing that problematic image with the others I took on the same day, have converted to the same resolution and same file format, it is still about 4 times bigger in file size. Can't for the life of me figure out why. Hmmmppppph

11.5MB???????? Holy mackerel! That's one huge file! Save it as a jpg with 90% compression. That'll get the files ize down before you upload it. That's what I do on all my files, and it hasn't resulted in any loss of clarity. I mean, you're not going to print these wallpaper files as a poster or anything, are you? Save the high-res version at home, and upload a jpg.

The only time I re-post an image is if I delete the first version because I believe something in it does not appear right...Then I post it as a "re-do" or "v2", along with a brief explanation of what I did and why...

I am a complete newcomer to all of this, and just embarking on a new hobby of photograpy and am amazed at the photos and art on this site. I have tried to upload two of my images and also an icon to go with my name and nothing seems to happen. Can't find them anywhere on the site, (not unless were voted off immediately!!!!) and dont know if I am supposed to do something else. The image sizes that I have tried up upload are 2.40 MB jpeg dim 2304 x 1728 and also 1.43 MB. Can anyone enlighten me please?

You have no image that have been uploaded to the site (even if they were since deleted or rejected I would be able to see them). Therefore I would suggest that the issue is something to do with your browser settings... especially with an icon since if it was too large or the wrong format you would get an automated error message. Since you say you get nothing, I would say it's a browser issue.
