I have my photo files in alphabetical order in my folder and on my desktop, and suddenly it came out of the alphabetical order, and is now just randomly shown as to the photos, when I try to choose a photo to work with in my PSP or Photoshop..Can anyone
tell me how that could have happened? Is it maybe a Windows
problem or what could it be? And what can I do about it to fix it back to how its supposed to be.
That's exactly what I did, and it didn't work. It has always worked, and in that folder it works, but when I open PSP or Photoshop to find a photo to work with, that's when it's all a mess, it is NOT in alphabetical order, so I would have to go thru a couple hundred in my folder, and they NOT in order. Any other ideas?
any file selector gizmo has columns, yes? .. those columns are NAME, SIZE, DATE (modified) .. etc ..
yes?
clicking "date" one time, for example, will list your files OLDEST first, clicking it again will list NEWEST first
clicking "size" will list SMALLEST first, clicking it again will list LARGEST first
yes? ..
clicking "NAME" will bring your files back to A-Z order .. clicking it again will list Z-A
some file-selector gizmos have a button or menu selection, at the top, to display the list in "Details" mode (described above) .. or .. thumbnails mode .. or .. LIST (similar to above, but without the columns .. just a file name)
if you are using FIREFOX right now, go to the "file" menu and choose "open file" .. above the file list window you should see little icons for: .. "go up a folder level" .. "new folder" .. and the aforementioned icon\menu for selecting "details view" \ "thumbnails view", etc
if you aren't using FIREFOX, why the heck not?
try that out and get back to me .. I mean, get back to Jacqueline
Yes I have FIREFOX...and I went to FILE menu and I chose OPEN FILE...but then what? You didn't exactly say what to do next?
I see the little icons..but now what? It did not change anything. My Photo File still has not reverted back to the photos being in alphabetical order, which is how they have been for always...they are in total disaray..more suggestions please?
the directions to FIREFOX was just to show you that some file-selector gizmos need to have "details" view turned on via that little toggle menu (some do not) .. firefox was just the most readily available example .. (I Don't Have PSP)
so ...
1) .. take what you've learned, (that the little icon-menu is there) ..
2) .. go to your PSP file-selector .. and, if necessary
3) .. toggle on "details" view ..
4) .. click on NAME .. thus, sorting your list back to alpha-numeric
sadly .. there is no "NAME-Column" to click on, to revert any other things in our lives that may be in "total disarray"
It is possible I may have gotten a virus, so I am going to install AVG.com I hear it is the BEST protection right now. So maybe that will do the trick. It seems to only be affecting
my photo files, so I will not be posting anything until I can fix that whole thing..thanx baby-big-ears..I love that term...it's soooooooo cute, just like you Keith!! Verena
Verena .. whether you have a virus is not under discussion right now .. no virus author worth his salt is going to spend even five minutes to code a virus to cause image-sort-order chaos
he has a rep to maintain
part of the "fun" in trying to help you is your devil-may-care compliance with the instructions you have been given
did you try the things listed or not? ... don't make me come up there
Nasty ol' man ain't ya??!!! I have a "few" things to do over this family time period other than this ol' computer, but I will for sure take your stuff under consideration, well, that is IF
IF IF I can decipher it first..heheh...."make you come up here?"
Ohhhhhhhhh hey I might just enjoy that!!!!!!!!!!
Specifically what you are asking about is found approximately 1/2 way down the web page in the above link. Reiterating part of that here, and I quote:
"To select thumbnails by such characteristics as file name, file size or file type, choose "Select" from the "File" menu to display the Select dialog, from which you can pick the appropriate selection characteristics."
I guess I have not explained myself right. I have DONE ALL the things all of you suggested, but I'll tell ya what...first of all...when I click on FILE...it does NOT say SELECT ok?...and then SELECT ICONS BY??? I am really not that much of a dumb blonde...seriously...I DID ALL THAT...and the names remain totally in random order, no matter what I TRY to do, they DO NOT change back to alphabetical order. I have CHOSEN NAME over and over, and it will NOT NOT NOT...go back to the original way. Believe me, I have tried all you all said. And there is NOTHING that is changing it ok? That is exactly why I believe it's a virus at this point. Does anyone agree? or disagree?
Or have any other suggestions?
is any of your OTHER file listings out of whack? .. all of the Virus Authors I hang out with wouldn't just aim for PSP, I mean, NOBODY uses that
for example .. using firefox, go to the file menu, choose "OPEN FILE" .. navigate to where you keep your photos ..
is the list out of order? ..
have you determined what order they ARE in? .. date? size? klingon? (all virus authors speak fluent klingon)
or, is it as you say? .. totally random (that, in itself, would be worth seeing)
and, while I've got you on the horn .. you have a happy Thanksgiving day! Hopefully your family will sit in their assigned seats .. some things need order
could you post a video on YouTube showing us that you have worked through your homework assignment
Hey there..yes I went to Firefox, I went to the File menu and chose OPEN FILE...I checked my photo files and yes it is total havoc !! Some of the names of my photos will maybe start with A
and then they are clumped together but then there will be a bunch that start with all different letter, and then there might be a bunch that starts with E or W or whatever...and then all the rest are a mess, just exactly like they are in the literal folder when I open it. It is tooooo weird!!
YouTube? I have heard of it, but have never been there.Post a video? Nope....ROFLMfannyoff!!!!..I've sure tried to work on this but me thinx tomorrow I will load the ADV.com on there. I hear it's the best virus protection program. I get a free
trial for a month to decide if I want it or not. GAWD, I hate messes with my PC. Everything was doing fine and then this started..
Mr.K..YOU have a nice holiday too ya hear? I will not do much Thurs, but on Satururday my whole family is coming out here to cook, bake and just have fun. I live in the countryside, and there plenty more room here..inside and out. So thanx for allyour tips..I'll let you know what happens next..V
I tried just now to post a photo, but it won't work at all. I cannot find the photo plus when I type in the name of the file(the name of the photo) it does not recognize it. Sounds like a horrible mess to me...I'm going to sleep, where I can get some peace and quiet..whew..
Ok, I'll assume you are using Firefox as a browser and your main problem is finding a file you want to upload to Caedes (to make things simple).
Once you select Browse on the upload image page you should see the "File upload" window.
Click on View Menu icon > Select Details. It should look like the list in this image. (It might be set to thumbnail view or details view, depending on how you prefer it.)
Click on the Name column to sort by file name.
Click View Menu icon > Select Thumbnails to get the thumbnails view back.
If you don't have something similar to that please post a screenshot and we might be able to help you further.
Again, I appreciate the input, but it didn't help with what I am trying to fix or figure out. I downloaded AVG virus protection onto my PC and I have NO virus. So that's good. But I STILL do not know how to fix my problem.
In my files I keep on my desktop for my photos I have smaller files under various subjects. EACH of THOSE files are in alphabetical order. When I open either my Paint Shop Pro OR my Adobe Photoshop, they USED to be in alphabeticaL oder, and now they are NOT. I cannot look for a file in that order, I have hundreds of photos there. I just need to find a way to get this problem fixed, or I cannot post or find any of the photos in a consecutive way.
The only thing i could possibly think of that is causing your problem should have been fixed by something that has already been mentioned. I would probably recommend having someone who is tech savvy take a look at it next time you have someone like that over.
Thanx Milo...but I personally don't know anyone who is tech savvy....so I guess I'm stuck. I resorted to having taken a couple photos today, put them on my desktop in a new folder and am able to work on them in PSP and Photoshop, only because I can find them, and there aren't enough to have to organize them as yet. I will keep trying. Do you know of anyone in caedes who might be able to have a new idea? Thanx..V
Verena. The principles should be exactly the same for most any program. Most applications use the same interface when it comes to browsing for files. If you follow the example I provided you should be able to get the files sorted alphabetically again.
If that doesn't help PLEASE post a screenshot of what your PSP or other program shows you when trying to open a file. At least then we would be able to see what it does and stand a modicum of a chance to help you sort it out.
Ok, when I click on Browse, I do get the photos in alphabetical order, I used to use the FILE button and click on OPEN and I would view my photos that way, and that's the part that is no longer in alphabetical order. I never used the BROWSE before. I can use that I suppose. As far as posting a screenshot? I do not remember how to do that. Please let me know.Thank you again.V
When you're looking at a window that lists files, it looks kind of like a table with different types of information in each column of the table, right? On the left usually are the file names. Next might be file size or type or date and so on. Sort of like:
Name .... | Date Modified ... | Size
rose.jpg ... 09/03/07 ............ 1.3MB
sky. jpg ... 10/02/07 ............ 1.01 MB
In Photoshop, if you go to File and then Open and look immediately above the first file that's listed, do you see words the computer provides about what's in a column? Like, for instance, the word "Name"?
Click on that computer-supplied word "Name" and see what happens.
It should change the order in which the files below it appear. Click it again, and the order will change again.
Go over and click a different computer-supplied word like "Date Modified" or "Size," and the order in which the files appear will change again.
What you choose to click, determines how your files get listed.
Changing the order in one window, may not change the order in all windows. Certainly it won't change the order in different computer programs.
But you may find that in a single computer program, clicking "Name" when you have one folder of files open won't change how other folders' files get displayed when you open those, though you can click to change the order in any you have open at the time.
Yes, the FILE > OPEN command should also have a similar appearance (with the columns) as the BROWSE window. So all you need to do is click on the top of the corresponding column you want it sorted as. (You might have to first switch to detail view before you can do it, if your view is set to thumbnails/icons). Once you've done that. Close the program. It should then remember your selection as the default the next time you use it.
PS. Screenshot: Press the PrtScn (Print Screen) button on your keyboard. Open any image editing program and paste (CTRL+V) into it. The screenshot should be there. Save as JPEG and your done.
When I go to Photoshop and go to FIle and then Open...the first thing above the first folder is "share to web upload folder"
and it has nothing else like you mentioned. Nothing is there that appears to be able to change the order.
The FILE/OPEN command does not have a similar appearance as the BROWSE window, it USED to have that, but no more.:(
The Prt button on my keyboard is at the top just above
the number keys. I will try that
OK K........."there's just no helping some people" brings this to a conclusion...SOME people PM'd me and have been very helpful..and there might be a solution, but as of this moment there still has been none that worked. In PSP go to File and choose 'Sort" from the drop down list.
A "Thumbnail Sort' window will open giving ascending or descending options for the order. Beneath that there is 'Sort Condition' which allows you to select File attributes and/or image Attributes.
You can choose to sort by Name which I would imagine would give you back the alphabetical order.
There is also a 'Secondary Sort' tab to give further refinement.
This is copied directly from the PSP Help file
"To sort thumbnails by file characteristics:
Choose File > Sort to open the Thumbnail Sort dialog.
On the Primary Sort tab, select the primary sort criteria for thumbnails.
To add additional sort criteria, click the Secondary Sort tab, and select additional criteria.
Select the sort criteria, then click OK.
Note: Sorting thumbnails is a one-time operation. The thumbnails will not remain sorted if you add new images or change the properties of the existing files. New images are always added to the end of the list."
Verena, first and foremost I am hoping hoping hoping you've backed up your hard drive with an external HDD...JUST in case a virus is the culprit.... Just a wee thought... ~Mary~
I appreciate ALL of your ideas...I've tried them all...and yet it stays the same..and even when I add other new photos, it is still a random mess, not modified, not alphabetically. LynEve I will try your thoughts next tho. I haven't been on here much, due to the weather and having elecricity off now and then..but I will give any ideas a try, that's for sure. Yes, I have ALL my things backed up, and I DID reboot, it is usually the first thing I do. I'll keep trying. One of my friends on caedes said he'd give me a phone call soon and work me thru this, so far he hasn't but, I hope he will make time...thanx to all of you for not giving up on me...V
Well, it looks like I'm not making a bit of progress...my friend never phoned...so I guess I am just going to have to wait it out and hope one day someone will know the answer. Thanx to all of you that have tried...V
2) In the folder tree to the left, click on the folder that contains your pictures that you want to work on.
3) You should see thumbnails of your pictures just to the right of the folder tree.
4) If the thumbnails are not in alphabetical order, you can go to File > Sort. And select the Sort Condition to "Name", then click OK.
5) To work on any number of pictures, double-click any thumbnail to have it open to full size in PSP. The little "x" in the corner of the picture can be clicked to close, and you will default to your browse window again. You can also click the browse tab to select any number of other pictures, and each picture will open in a separate tab.
Just wanted to let all of you nice people know that I FIXED IT!
Finally! I got it all done! With the help of everyone, and then I got a lovely phone call from a good friend, who is also from caedes, and by talking about it on the phone, well, that was so much easier to follow, and it worked!!! Thank you all again....so very very much....as they say "You Rock!!!" Verena
tell me how that could have happened? Is it maybe a Windows
problem or what could it be? And what can I do about it to fix it back to how its supposed to be.
