The Sigilla or Sigzooka – whatever you prefer to call it – has resurfaced at the PMA show in its final production guise. It’s a Canon or Nikon mount 200-500 f/2.8 EX DG or 400-1000mm at f/5.6. Sigma have given it a bit of a makeover to make it look more user friendly but the new green paint job makes it look even more like a bazooka. Im not sure that any lens that weighs 16KG and requires it’s own external battery pack for autofocus could ever be classed as fully user friendly.
More interesting is the final production release of their DP1 compact camera. It features the same full size foveon SLR sensor as SD14 and a wide prime lens that comes with optional lens hood and filter rings.
do you mean the little DP1 being ugly? I kind of like it - very minimalist I guess and I think probably a bit of a challenge to use - I like the idea of back to basics stuff - no fancy presets, no face detection etc etc. I think art used to drive the technology now the roles have reversed - the new generation of face detection for instance allows for all sorts of tweaking and some wont even release the shutter unless all the subjects are smiling and have their eyes open. It just seems like its taking all the fun, the skill, and the learning experience out of taking a picture.
sorry I meant the pic from Pierre's link.. it does looks like a bazooka.. I think the new face detection takes away a lot of spontanious shots of people.. I agree the new cameras do take out the fun of learning..
Now, Jacqueline, they would only suspect you if it came in 'camouflage' and only in the US. I rather like the look of it, but it simply is much more than I need. lol
id go for wildlife photographers with it tripod mounted in a hide for distant/skitish animals - in any event - it's a bit of a specialised piece of kit.
I thought about that and sporting events, but sporting events the photographers are allowed close enough to the action… the real limitation was what I remember Mayne saying about the price - something around $20,000 if I recall right? So at that price tag, what are you shooting that makes it worthwhile/profitable/possible?
they are still keeping tight lipped about the price. Sigma's current top model is about $7,000. To be honest - I dont think they have the image/clout to go much higher than $10,000.
Believe me...people need all the help they can get with taking pictures lol. Anything short of me taking the picture would be welcome. Maybe I was pulling your leg Cat...I certainly don't recall talking price, especially Astigma lens;-)
Canon still has available the ultimate 1200mm. Start thinking a second mortgage though.
