I came into Caedes because a friend suggested I do so. However, I forgot to ask him lots of questions first.
One, what is the C-Index?
Two, what is the criteria for a photo to be put in the permanent files? I am beginning to feel like a real failure when most of my best shots have been archived.
Three, I don't see many people shots in Caedes and I like people. I have been posting mostly sunsets, bird shots and landscapes because that is mostly what I see on Caedes.

Hi Coleen,
Here is the answer to the c-index question.
Taken directly from FAQ found on the left, under the Navigation Bar:
What is the c-index?
The c-index is a number between zero and 100 that aims to give a rough idea of the quality of an image. The primary use of the c-index is to enable users to sort galleries in order to bring the best images to the top. It is also used when automatically selecting images for displaying on the homepage. The c-index is not used to decide whether or not an image is promoted to the permanent image collection nor whether the image gets deleted (although it may be used to help the Praetors find good images worthy of permanent status.
The criteria for the permanent gallery has a lot to do with the uniqueness of a photo. For example, something with a low c-index but very interesting and rare will be promoted.
Occasionally, the c-index can be used, but that isn't the case now since the artist has the choice to 'opt out' of the c-index.
Re: people photo's. The primary purpose that the site was created for was desktop/wallpaper use. There is however, a "people" category which can be found when you scroll down the photography category on the top left! HERE.
Finally, you are not a failure :-) Many have felt that way and have survived! Keep doing what you are doing and have fun. Take some time and stroll through the permanent gallery and see what is contained there.
Coleen, my advice is this, ignore the c-index! As long as you are happy with the image and the comments you receive from trusted friends are good then don't worry. Many people have worried too much about the c-index on this site and from what I see "that way bitterness and discontent lies!" You'll never please all the people all the time, so don't try to.
As for having images in the Permanent Galleries, there are many people who have been on the site for years and have posted hundreds of images and don't have any in the Permanent Galleries. My gallery has 516 images of which 4 are in the Permanent Galleries (under Lighthouses). Keep taking the pictures that's all you can do.
Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.
as for the perms.. some of it has to do with uniqueness, and also, it might be subject to the opinions of whichever image mod happens to be doing the perm/ archiving function that day. look at the bright side..once upon a time, images weren't archived..they were

Regarding perms...froma mathamatical standpoint, and to use round numbers, if 100 posts are uploaded every day , that's 36500 images per year. If the goals of the perm galleries are to a) highlight the best on the site and b) make it easy for the casual viewer to skim a gallery and select a desktop, the mods must make tough choices on what to include. Imagine, 3000 posts per month to go through to select a relatively small number to include in the permanent galleries.
Hang in there, keep posting for the sake of sharing your art, improving yourself and enjoying the caedes community, not just striving to be permed!
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving
safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in
sideways, body
thoroughly used up and totally worn out, screaming "WOO HOO - What a Ride!"
In the beginning the site was vaporous and formless, just shifting fog on the plains ...
the first "rating system" took place right on the image page .. this led to inflated scores because only the people drawn to the image, in the first place, were voting a score .. numbers in the 90s were common
then, a southerly breeze pushed the mist to the side, and revealed a "voting booth" sitting on the plains .. the voting booth sought to impart impartial judgment on the, soon to be, sentient beings ... images were now receiving scores by people not drawn to the image by their own interests ... with the desired goal of popping the inflated, go-go era, summer-of-love, hippie-fest, disco ball ... (*cough*) .. that we had enjoyed before
And the world has not been the same ... the logic is there, in the plan .. if only your friends and fans vote a score, what does it really mean? .. somebody, who is not already misty-eyed on the subject, will be harder to please, and will vote a level headed score, or perhaps lower because they are nonplussed ... and, yes, we have had many heated conversations, and tater slinging food fights on the subject
One thing you will find in your art-posting adventure is: not everybody wants to be critical .. they see their role as being supportive, encouraging .. and this is fine, to a degree. In "The emperor has new clothes" .. nobody would tell him the truth, that he had NO clothes .. and, so, he was none the wiser
You have a few avenues open to you .. when you post, ASK, in your description, for an honest critique, for help, tips, guidance to make the image better .. and you will get some .. many artists here have stated that the site has helped them become better .. others don't have to state it, it's obvious in their imagery .. it just takes time and a willingness to observe, absorb, and osmosisize (sp?)
the Request for Comment forum exists, largely, for just this type of topic .. if, after your image has been on site for a week or so, and has rec'd a score lower than you initially thought it would .. or the score it rec'd doesn't match the flowery comments below it .. you can ask in that forum for a critique ... note: generally, few people respond to this forum because they don't wish to be critical .. or whatever
Please try to ignore the C-Index as Steve / braces says because otherwise it can become a unhealthy obsession trust me !
As for the permanent gallery very few artists ever get their work posted there. Always break open a bottle of bubbly if an image of yours gets there, no disrespect meant to you Coleen (o: Don't feel like a failure the only stuff of mine in the perm gallery belongs to the community section. Lol
And finally I must agree with your last comment the majority of artists on Caedes simply don't enjoy people shots .. shock horror !! Don't let this influence your decisions too much though, post people shots if that's what you like there's a category for it why not use it ? It's your gallery after all, show us your individual style. (o:
Caedes is a evolving website just like any other relax, & enjoy it it has far more positives than negatives, & is often great fun.
