I have an "unskilled newbie" question about reviews. I have read the guidelines for good reviews and they are very similar to those for good critiques of science-fiction written by aspiring authors. Unfortunately, I am not as qualified to review the art found on this site as I am the writing. I have therefore commented only when I am *very* impressed with the image and not commented at all in other instances.
I am still too unskilled to know what *I* am doing, much less being so presumptuous as to advise others, all of whom have more talent and experience than I. Should I stop commenting altogether? I don't want to waste bandwidth (or whatever), but perhaps I should limit myself to personal messages to the artist involved?
Even though you don't have specific advice in mind, you still can have an opinion. One step to being good is first knowing what is good. It can be a great exersize for you to find a work that you like and then try to analyze WHY you like it. So even the unskilled can make constructive comments.
However another "it's soooo cool!!!" comment is kinda useless when 5 other people have already said the exact same thing.
I agree that it is a little pointless just saying "It's good" when there are heaps of other comments there already saying the same thing, however if there are no comments yet, or if the other comments are different, it is good to hear encouraging comments, even if they don't offer any advice. You could understand that if a new artist posted several pics, and got no comments at all, they might not post anything else... just knowing that someone likes your work enough to leave a quick comment may be all the encouragement they need. However, I think you should avoid leaving a comment just because no one else has.
Feel free to talk among yourselves. I'll eventually have a link to this page from each Image Review page.
