I often find my self pondering seemingly mysterious subjects that you would have thought would have simple explanations but they never seam to pan out like that. Stuff like:
#1. The positioning of the great pyramids of Giza relative to the combined continental land mass?
#2. Why cant American car manufacturers get their heads round building quality cabins and suspension systems developed in this century?
#3. Who is the father of Katie Holmes baby?
That kind of thing .
So I thought it would be fun for people to post their queries on the mysteries of life and see if anyone else has answers for them ..
Hmm, maybe ... unfortunately ... add in some particles of pollution too. :o|
Carrying on with the thread ...
Have a look ... here. (More towards the bottom of the article, if you want to avoid some lengthy reading; under "Fibonacci and Nature" and on ... for some images and examples.)
Gem, I once sat in disbelief and watched a squirrel nibble away at a styrofoam cup....that was empty. I'd worry not about it's consumption of an actual food item after that.
It's better to have a small actual advantage than the chance of a greater one.
Origin:
It isn't until the 19th century that we find the phrase in its currently used form. The earliest I've located is in a US newspaper The Huron Reflector, from January 1833:
"But few persons, so prone are we to grasp at the shadow at the expense of the substance, bear in mind the good old adage, 'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.'"
This refers to the phrase as old. How long the current version predates 1833 isn't clear, but variations of the phrase have been known for centuries. The earliest English version of the proverb is from the Bible and was translated into English in Wycliffe's version in 1382, although Latin texts have it from the 13th century:
Ecclesiastes IX - A living dog is better than a dead lion.
Alternatives that explicitly mention birds in hand come later. The earliest of those is in Hugh Rhodes' The boke of nurture or schoole of good maners, circa 1530:
"A byrd in hand - is worth ten flye at large."
John Heywood, the 16th century collector of proverbs, recorded another version in his ambitiously titled A dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe tongue, 1546:
"Better one byrde in hande than ten in the wood."
The Bird in Hand was adopted as a pub name in the UK in the Middle Ages and there are still many pubs of that name there. This refers back to mediaeval falconry where a bird in the hand (the falcon) was certainly worth more than two in the bush (the prey).
The term bird in hand must have been known in the USA by 1734, as that is the date when a small town in Pennsylvania was founded with that name.
if you take your brain .. that's one more suitcase to pack .. and, if you're driving, you'll get better gas mileage if you are not hauling around, what is obviously, a very prodigious brain .. because it takes a very prodigious brain to reach the conclusion not to bring it
poor sods that bring their brain have to tip a bellman to carry it up to their room .. well, in the higher class establishments, anyway
*ponders the velocity of an object, say for example, a ball bearing, leaving the pouch of a sling shot which was pulled to maximum capacity. pondering further, considers the force of an impact resulting from said ball bearing colliding in mid-air with Les' cookie jar*
Why, as part of the effort to turn the company around and ramp up its vehicles quality, Chryslers new owners, Cerberus, have appointed the CEO of Home Depot to run the business.
Wellll ... it's obvious to me ... it's a throwback, a turning of the clock back to the time where Lee Iacocca took bits and pieces 'off of the shelves' and 'renovated' ... 'put together' ... new models. :oP
Home Depots' corporate slogan? ... "You can do it, we can help."
Ooh there's plenty of jokes in there somewheres, lol.
Ya would think ... think, that in these global times ... corporations would be a touch more sensitive to image, names and branding ... Cerberus; evidence to the contrary.
why is Hollywood so starved of original movie ideas? is it really that hard? latest bizzare offering? Warner Brothers deciding to green light a remake of Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon.
I am almost calmed down enough not to be cranky all over the place now HOWEVER in specific
Why it is possible for the C.A.T. Scan guy to come take my grandfather for his test, say "Hold on, let me make sure I have a signed consent form for you" - and never come back again. I honestly believe if I hadn't been there, it would have taken the e.r. a minimum of 3 hours to figure out my grandfather hadn't gotten tested - which would have meant that instead of getting his test 2 hours late, it would have been more in the area of 4 to 5 hours late. Nice notification process all the way around there.
P.S. - In between the Scan tech never coming back and having the test rescheduled, they managed to lose the signed consent form and I had to sign a new one. Oh yeah, well oiled machine that place was Saturday night.
He's fine btw, was more a case of 90 year old throwing up and and can't keep food down? Might just be a bug but swing him by the e.r. just in case.
How far along was Robert Jordan on the 12th and final book in the Wheel of Time series before he died this weekend? It was due to be released this year, so one can only hope he was in final editing stages *prays hard*. R.I.P.
P.S. - How come the only place I can find this news is on the official Dragonmount website or the New Zealand Herald? Shouldn't Yahoo! News be right on top of it?
Why the Weinsteins didnt learn from their mistake of chopping and padding Kill Bill from one good 3 hour movie into two (one good one mediocre) separate flicks and so did the same with Grindhouse (one average/good long flick) into two (over long and tedious) movies. Equally mysterious is why QT keeps losing his spine and saying thats what he always intended at subsequent press junkets. Nobodys buying into that spin at all.....
If you developed and tried to sell a product range that was consistently at least a generation behind its rivals in the technology stakes and got outsold month on month since its launch by a factor of over a 100 to 1 by all the other big players, why would you do it all again the next year with equally outdated products? Anybody having the answer to that one can email it to Robbie Bach as quickly as possible before he gets fired/leaves by mutual consent.
With most if not all of his incoherent truth scientific assertions now fully debunked or at best dismissed as sensationalist exaggerations by the scientific community, how on earth did Al (where did my political career go?) Bore win the Nobel Prize? In keeping with his movie promotional tour antics, will he be chartering a private jet to Geneva to pick up his prize? The worlds gone mad. Again.
"Al Gore, former US vice president, and the UN climate panel won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for raising awareness of the risks of climate change.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Gore and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to share the $1.5m prize from a field of 181 candidates.
The choice of Mr Gore will give rise to concerns - for US conservatives at least - about the perceived politicisation of the prize, previously awarded to Jimmy Carter and Mohamed El Baradei. It raises questions about the broadening of the prizes criteria beyond the traditional understanding of peacemaking."
Just a little more insight for some as to why Phil is testing 'his cranial tolerances against an immovable object'.
*takes note of the dents against the wall from Phil's previous examinations*
More than anything its depressing in the sense that it further confirms the sliding standards of the once prestigious awards and more importantly as a somewhat bitter indictment of an age that is promoted as an era of fighting against tyranny and oppression a largely fictionalised account of the state of the worlds ecological rather than its political climate is the best effort on offer for promoting peace amongst the planets many nations.
but but but .. we all know, NOW, that a Prius can do a hundred and five on the freeway
THAT, alone, will have a greater effect on global warming .. spurring the sales of Priuses (Priui?) to a heretofore reluctant crowd .... NASCAR, for example
Why do Disney use James Newton Howard's score from the 2003 version of Peter Pan as the music for their tourism commericals?
They wouldnt have any part in making the movie as they refused to pay the required royalty fee to the Great Ormond Street Childrens hospital. The hospital was gifted the copyright to the story by J M Barrie and anyone wishing to dramatise it must make a donation to the hospital.
Disney said they had made two donations already in 50 years & didnt see why they should have to do it again. nice.
How can movie theaters charge 4.50 for a pretzel, and then when you ask for cheese, they give you a miniature cup with a teaspoon of cold cheese and say, "Then the total is $6.00." ?
Please, even if you don't visit my gallery, check out my "Faves".I've left them intact since day "1", and would like it if every image there got the attention they deserved.
Well, you see, I was having an off day and just didn't feel like popcorn. yearning for adventure, I thought I'd buy the pretzel.. and the cheese... and oh I'm so ashamed.
*bows head shamefully*

Here's a great mystery of the world. What's up with anal probing ? I mean seriously.
Aliens fly billions of miles, blow through red lights, do the occasional California roll through a stop sign here & there, toss out beer cans & litter up the celestial highways.... just to get here & stick a metal cattle prod up our butts ?
i don't know about you guys, but i REALLY want to know why the word raspberry is spelled with a 'p' but pronounced without one. I suppose it's just one of the many Great Mysteries of the English language...
why people see fit to just click on an image's page, and not open the image to see it at it's full size.
I mean, really. Why bother? Is it that you're going to the page, and "oh, this is 'so-and-so's work...nevermind"? If you can't be bothered or don't have the time or whatever to comment, at least open it. It shows the artist you give a damn.

Rob, I've occasionally clicked on something from the new images gallery, and seeing the larger page image realized it wasn't what I thought it was and wasn't interested in seeing the full-size image from there.
ok, just that I've seen a much higher (closer) ratio of views to downloads of certain artists (no,not just mine) that were bracketed by lesser known, or perhaps poplular artists.
