As some of you might remember i was taking part in a local art project, to make a unique deck of cards! Each card representative of an individual artist working in Bristol, the damp town i call home! The Pack is now available to view and purchase from 'The Pack's' website .... The Bristol Pack. And as a result of this dicussion we are now attempting to create a 'Caedes Deck' of playing cards! A wonderful opportunity to highlight the amazing diversity of artists in our cummunity!
And here is the current list of artists and thier cards! Card List.
WANT TO TAKE PART?
If You would like to take part please join the discussion or send me a PM if you would like to be dealt a card!
Your card design can be approached in one of two ways... you may design your own version of the standard playing card form with just some of your own added artistic flare, or you can make an attempt to interpret the card with out using standard card images or formats! As long as the cards value and suit are 'reasonably' easy to interpret!
Specifically the card has to be designed to fit, when printed, on a standard playing card. This is a 63x88mm card so keep your image in scale with this, the widtt to height ratio would be 1 : 1.3968.
Most importantly have fun and bring something unique and personal to the mix!
I would be up for doing another- if that is they way we want to go... don't want to be the only one doing 2 though... *crosses fingers for a funky card*
Maybe we should wait before assigning a second card to a member... I don't see any reason to rush it, right now the calendars are the caedes items to buy for this Winter (or Summer for you all South of the equator). The cards would be good to put up to sell at the end of Winter (here in the Northern Hemisphere). People will then soon to be taking spring-break trips, where playing cards are always standard gear to bring along. ( If you get lost or stranded on a deserted isle, start playing a hand of solitaire and within 5 minutes someone will look over your shoulder and tell you where to place a card, guaranteed. )
haha! well i was just thinking out loud! as i said i have notime limits.. and i want to try and fill the list! doubling up will come as a last resort if a deadline is approaching!
That's useful, though standard shapes in most applications will usually include the four suits.
In terms of functionality, I think this exercise is a bit of fun: due to the wide variety of designs, I don't think the pack will necessarily be easy to play cards with. I need to take some time to work on my design, it keeps getting put to one side.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
yes the functionality of the deck comes second place to celebrating the variety of images! the same was true of the bristol pack! You can play a game of cards if you like, but it tends to make every hand a challenge to decipher!
Hm... Rather not, that would intrude considerably on the artistic expression of the individual artist. But I do see the point you make, perhaps include a small index with artist, card and small thumbnails to go with it in the pack.
if the card isn't clear- then what is the point of the deck of cards? I'm assuming that most people would want to use them- not frame them on the wall. If its an intrusion on the artist- then maybe they should make it clearer, or create their own emblem.
yeah, kjh00, i'm sure that's what i want... cards that look exactly like other cards. because i'm sure that's what putting a small label on them would do- and it would spoil your art. lol. up to grim i guess. good luck selling em- seems like playing cards are meant to play with. and if they look sweet- thats a bonus. but if you can't make out what it is- then its not a good job of artwork on the card, and it makes the deck pointless. you want something to hang on your wall- buy a calendar.
I think if we have the standard symbols/characters on the corners, then at least we can see what the card is - a compromise between artistic license and functionality.
Having said that, from the very beginning I always though of this as an artistic exercise - it never occurred to me that anyone would seriously play with them. Even if the cards are relatively easy to interpret, they will still all look different.
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell
Well i also consider it an artistic venture! But with an aim to at least make the cards identifiable through intrepretation at the least ,regardless of whether conventional card layouts or stereotypical suit imagery is used or not! It would be nice to play with the deck, but i dont want functionality to be the prime focus! I also want to encourage the levels of artistic freedom and variation we have on the site, and that it should be reflected in the cards!
im sure it would be very possible to add a few extra cards to the deck! with some effort we could create some thumbnail identification cards, if there really are some cards in the final deck that are hard to identify! But then im sure as the designs come in we can all encourage each other with suggestions on how to make our cards clear without treading on any ones artistic sensibilities!
As long as there is plenty of contrast between the background in the two corners and the card marks there really shouldn't be a problem identifying them. (A tip for working with fonts and busy backgrounds is to outline the characters with a thin contrasting line (for example: white letters with a black outline.)
well i for one have no intention of including any corner markers to my 3 of Skulls (HAHA) but then that sort of design really doesnt need them! And if your image is recognisable for what it is by some other means, then i dont see the need for every card having to feature them!

the cards gallery has shrunk a wee bit...i guess the respective artists have deleted their starting images. wow...old skool caedes indeed. :~) i reckon this idea needs a bit more attention so that folks can get cards assigned & work on them over some time, give the cheese some time to mature. how many cards/designs are left Grimster? maybe some encouragement in the spreading of the word....?
lol! Old school... Hehe... Could be, I'm not aware of cards being pulled as of yet though. Some cards have been moved to the "permanent" gallery though. I definitely agree that this project needs some extra ants in the pants though.
Of course you can Marcie i gave the deck a good suffle and dealt you the Ten of diamonds' and while i was dealling i hit Bob (reddawg151) with the 9 of spades. Good luck to both of you with your designs!
so when i boils down & if there arent enough artists to take cards(i hope not, i'd liek to see a different work on each card) i be up for taking another. but til the i will be working on my king of diamonds :~)
Love the sound of this project - I love cards and am in the process of working on a digital tarot deck - give the old deck a shuffle for me Grim, and let me know what I got, okay? Thanks! (I'm really hoping I get the card I want as I've already got ideas for it - LOL) I used to make ATC's - can't see this as being any different
Ok before i vanish for the holidays i better shuffle and deal the cards out one more time! Xentrik will be designing the '9 of Hearts' good luck with that, no time limits yet! Also for Kazadoodle the 'Queen of spades', have fun with it! It might not be the card you wanted, but the random factor is at work!
Wahoo - I was dealt a Queen card, which is good enough. I've uploaded an image already and would post the url here, but it's still in the process of being approved as I write - LOL
i'll be catching up and getting back into the swing of things during the week! so dont think you post are falling on deaf ears.. or blind eyes! Expect to hear from me on Monday!
ok lets see!... Mythica.. the gods of the deck dealt you out the 'Queen of Clubs'...pixelpusher your going to be working on the '6 of spades'.....CurtieBear ive hit you with the '4 of Diamonds'.. i'll be checking my PM's later to make sure im not missing anyone!
hmm yep.. a few more to add! im so slack! bad bad bad grimbles! wonderful ive dealt you out the '8 of Hearts'.....rhinebeck you get the '2 of Hearts'....oksyl you have been dealt with the '10 of Spades'... and if your up for it, ive dealt you out the '7 of Clubs' DixieNormus!.. phew i think thats everyone now!
how slack of me! oh and i thought i did so well catching up! lucky the deck still has plenty of surprises to dish out! and you've bagged the 'King of clubs', sorry for the delay in your design frenzy!
yes please feel free to produce multiple versions of your cards! infact its better to do it! post one, get some feedback and start working on refining it or another design!
Not to sure yet, if you design a card when is the deadline for your images to be completed? And, if you come on board and for some reason can not complete your card, what do you then do? This would be a step out for me so I'm a little nervous. Thanx!!
well as of right now there is no deadline attached to the project! filling all the spaces in the deck is step 1, so the sooner you get on board the longer you have till any deadlines will be even considered! I dont want to put pressure on anyone so relax and take your time, the only time concerns to worry about is how long me and a few other card junkies can wait to get a deck in our grubby little paws! if you come on board and for some reason you dont feel you can complete your card, its not like im making you sign anything in blood! Your always able to hand the card back in so someone else can give it ago..so dont worry, everyone at caedes understands that sometimes.. once in a blue moon, on a leap year, when the planets are in full conjunction, and theres not a vowel in the month, that real life sometimes gets in the way of things! I say go for it! You have everyone's support in any help you need with your card at any point in the process! i was this close to shuffeling the remaining deck and dealing you a card then, put me out of my misery let me cross another card off my list!
pick a card any card,, now put it in the deck,,, now cut it.. and again.. shuffle.. was this your card??.. my goodness thats amazing the '4 of Hearts'... im sure you will come up with something m'lady! ...ladyprariefire that is!
Alright, I wanna see that card trick again, shuffle up the deck and lets see if you can do it twice. But this time I've already chosen my next card telepathically, no need to cut the deck. hmmm, is that your card you ask? Then I'll know if you can read my mind! Send me a random card............and I'll travial it even if you can't read my mind (lol). (though there is a particular card I'm looking for so I hope the deck has recieved my cosmic energy). Thanx..................................LPF
Sorry to say, that in order to give as many artists a chance as possible, we are limiting it to one card per artist. Thats why I've been randomly dealing the cards out, in the interests of fairness. But please feel free to submit as many variations on your card as you like!
IoVoAoVoI has now joined our swelling ranks! and will be after a quick shuffle, designing the 'Queen of Diamonds'! Happy to have you on board! and this means we only have 11 cards left to deal out! so we are officaly just over 3/4 of the way there!
Ive been busy and slowed down with some personal projects, but hings are still ticking over on the caedes Deck.. welcoming to our ranks FrozenSolid who will be doing our '5 of Clubs' and Temper who will also be clubbing togther with us, designing the '9 of Clubs'! Glad to have you on the team!
SHUFFLE SHUFFLE....oooooh fresh victims... welcome to the deck......mmynx34 with the '3 of diamonds' and hernoor with the '8 of spades'... good luck with your designs guys!
Hello Grim...I recently uploaded a design for the back of a playing card..but in regular wallpaper dimensions. I received quite a bit of encouragement to enter into your little project. I'm a bit shy about such things..but my creative juices are flowing. I already made an Ace of Clubs and uploaded it. :( I hope this is alright. I didn't fully read up on the rules for this before I did it. I apologize for any problems. You can just send it back to the regular New Images if it's a problem. No worries. I sent you a PM on this as well in case I don't get back to read your reply. You can PM or e-mail me. Either is fine. Thanks so much and I'm real sorry for being a pain in the toosh. Sarah
Hi Grim, I would like to join too. I saw that 7 of spades was available. I have sent a PM to you grimbug, but you have not been here for some days.
I post it today and if someone else have the 7 of spades I will take my 7 of spades away. No problem.

djrangman - the reason your card is not showing up is that it has been archived, along with a few others. I'll ask caedes to restore them. I also discovered there are a few old contest entries that have been archived which IMO shouldn't hapen so I'll ask him to restore those too. The most likely explanation is that a mod was going through all the permenant images and removed some low rated images without realising they were contest/project images.
