Satan.

Revelation 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12 ¶ Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Read the last verse very carefully...and ponder.

apathy.

People don't care, & they don't care that they don't care. BTW, I'm not being sarcastic or cutesy, I'm being honest. A crowd will let a woman get raped rather than interfere, or let an elderly man get abused on the street, rather than step in. So, I guess the child of apathy would be fear.

This has got to the closest to the problem... Apathy. We are fed daily doses of this crap, through TV and News Papers, we have become desensitized to it all.

<quote=timw4mail>
Okay, I'll elaborate. Without government, people would naturally have conflicts, and without some sort of infrastructure to resolve civil conflicts, chaos would naturally result.</quote>

You mean chaos doesn’t reign now? No conflicts? Mmmm... nope.
Chaos is there all right, as well as conflict. It’s just hiding behind a facade of civility which we call “government”, waiting of the opportune moment to erupt.
Case in point, where is the civility in Iraq? Our fearless leader, Bush, feels that it is his duty to bring a new government there, and things are worse off for our troops now, than when we first got there.
How about other “hot spots” around the world, Iran, N. Korea, India, Pakistan etc... on the surface, they’re all ‘Hi there nice to see ya”, while in the background they are fervently working to create their own nuclear toys.
It all boils down to a bunch of testosterone driven little boys trying to prove who has the biggest pecker in the playground. It’s all just hidden by that facade we call “government”. It’s a powder keg just waiting to go off.

And last but not least... the bible thumpers.
Don’t quote scripture to me, you may as well be quoting Nostradamus on the “End Days”. It is only as accurate as how the person reading it, makes it out to be. Kind of like a statistician putting together figures to prove his clients point. And, besides, people have been using the bible as a source of doom & gloom for god only knows how long. WW1... the doom of Revelations is here! WW2... the doom of Revelations is here! Bush pulling the trigger on Iran.... Rinse and repeat of, the doom of revelations is here!
Accept the bible for what it truly is, a guide for living, and the Commandments are the best examples of that. Nothing yanks my chain more than someone using this good book, or any other in fact (Koran, Torah etc...) to further their own agendas.

Every dominate spices eventually exhaust there environment. There for, it then moves on to the next environmental resource until it is exhausted. There for, we move on being the dominate spices of the planet until we exhaust off the resources.

We are very much like ant’s, exploiting our location and resources until we have nothing left to take and then, move on to the next resource such as Iraq and Iran. But in our situation; we are much worse! We leave nothing behind to regenerate the environment. We leave devastation, Pollution and poison the environment, leave nothing for a future generation. As for your second post....
Yes, America is primarily a christian country... but it is not the only religion here. That is one of the things that made America great. Freedom of Religion.

Do I hate religion? Heck no, I love religion for the diversity that it can bring to ones life. Is one better than the other? NO. Fundamentally, they are all alike, IMO. They all provide different windows for self reflection, personal growth and avenues to the divine. If that makes me a "Secular Humanist", then so be it.

To Clay:
Yup, a very good point. The human race is not a heck of alot better than cockroaches. We continue to take, without regards to returning anything back to the earth.
(Now this is where I may start getting into trouble)
And this is where christianity may have failed us... We go to church, have our wafer and wine, to have our sins forgiven without guilt. But yet, we destroy the world, knowing that we will be forgiven, which has kind of erroded any sense of accountability we may feel for our actions today and their impact on tomorrow. And so, the errors of the past continue up till today and again into tomorrow, with no sense of remorse. After all, we are gods favored and will be firgiven.

No Clay it's not called evolution it's called madness. It leads to nothing but destruction. Evolving to what? Destroyer of the world? It's man trying to create his own utopia without God....ultimately the antichrist which given the signs is alive right now and ready to come on stage. You won't be for long. Heard about human chipping? Digital Angel?....how appropriate. Plans are a cashless society. You must have a means to buy and sell...chips maybe?

Rev. 13:11 ¶ And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

In other words there is a power you can't control ....even if man is complacent and apathetic he only aids and abets the Prince of this world by doing so. For those who don't believe this I don't really care if you don't, it won't change my destiny one iota. Nor yours for that matter.

I don't think anyone is boo-hooing the Scriptures...but people also don't like it crammed down their throats. I believe in religious freedom, so feel free to say what you will, however respect my religious freedom as well.

And why was this thread started? I don't know, didn't do it...but beyond our afterlife, their are practical things we can do RIGHT NOW to help what is going on in the world. I agree with Lauren that apathy is a big problem in the world, someone else mentioned greed and money. Hard to change those things, but it can be done...whatever we screwed up, we can fix...if we want to. Ecologically, we can do alot more to help our environment. Socially we can stop being so self-absorbed and lend a helping hand to others. There are many things that we as humans CAN do...that most religions pretty much agree upon...help thy neighbor, etc...

The point I am making is this...it doesn't work to try to cram Scripture down ones throat, as people feel uncomfortable about others respecting their religious freedoms...instead SHOW people what can be done. Give a donation of clothing to a shelter, or food to a food bank. Volunteer to work for Habitat for Humanity. Donate funds to cancer, diabetes, AIDS, etc research. Be open to the rights of minorities, gays, and everyone that is supposedly somehow evil no matter how wonderful they are...simply because they were born from a certain race or have a certain sexual orientation. If you see someone broken down on the road, stop to ask if they need help. Give the homeless person hiding from the rain your umbrella. THESE are practical things that can be done to help better our world, and I think it can be agreed that no matter what religion someone is, doing these things would make their "Higher Power" (used to cover all the bases here) happy. Kind of like that movie "Pay it Forward" (the movie was a bit cheesy for me, but the message was a good one).

Just my 2 cents...now back to me watching... as I get flamed for saying this.

I’ll enter the fray on this one in the vain hope that it will remain in some small measure objective and informative but I somehow doubt it. I’ll lay a few ground rule definitions out first so as to avoid any misinterpretation that may or may not fan the flames. In the even that I refer to ‘religion’ it is meant in the sense of organised religious bodies or assemblies that do not represent the individual but only exist to serve their own advancement and indoctrination of others. On the other hand if I say ‘faith’ that is meant in the sense that I believe all religious activity should be conducted – as a personal expression of belief in whatever higher power you choose that in someway enriches both your own life and those of the people around you. Any reference to a persona in a singular fashion is a term of phrase rather than a specific person.

It is wrong to say that secular humanism has failed in its attempts to run the world if for no other reason than it has never had the opportunity to try. As far back as any recorded historical document, the world’s nations have invariably been run by fundamentalist or extremist religious leaders of various denominations who argued and often fought for their corner – trying to graft their religion and lifestyles on people who’d really rather keep there own. The same is true today – even more so really. It has virtually reverted to a Christian Crusades type scenario as others have mentioned already – you have the buffoon ‘Commander in Chief’ in one breath saying he respects the Muslim religion and Islamic belief and in the next interview saying ‘he is doing God’s work and is just in his cause’ regardless of his tramplings over constitutional and international law. As long as God told Dubya he is right then that’s all that matters. Apparently. History is littered with such idealistic and misguided fools, running countries and starting wars whilst hiding behind organised religion they have very little true conviction in, constantly seeking to oppress and indoctrinate their enemies into their own way of thinking. The definition in an encyclopaedia of secular humanism is ‘Secular humanism is a humanist philosophy that upholds reason, ethics, and justice and specifically rejects rituals and ceremonies as a means to affirm their life stance.’ Is that really such a terrible stance to take?
I see neither any good reason nor justification why any religious founding document be it the Bible, the Quran, the Talmud or whatever, be held up as some sort of definitive template for how life should be lead and how people should be judged. All of these are open to wild misinterpretation – usually to suit a particular argument at any one time – and have no doubt been doctored and altered innumerate times over the centuries to better suit the prevailing powers point of view. Indeed, the Christian Bible has been altered and translated many, many times and varying factions of the Christian faith cite differing versions to belittle opposing groups. The original texts of the Tanakh were in Hebrew & Aramaic but have subsequently been altered and translated into Greek (the Septuagint), pure Aramaic (the Targum Onkelos), Syriac, Coptic and Latin, among other languages. The original Latin translation, the Vetus Latina, is itself a composite of various other earlier versions. The major rewriting of the bible was the responsibility of Pope Damasus, and his secretary, Jerome which then became the Vulgate Latin translation. These texts were at the time altered and rewritten many times and represent a patchwork of stories more than a definitive record but to this day, the Vulgate version forms the basis of most bibles in circulation.

With all this confusion, indoctrination and mistrust, it is no surprise at all that so much hatred and evil is still perpetrated in the name of religion. The world will continue to decline into a mire until Faith is allowed to flourish and religion is confined to the history books. Fundamentalism and indoctrination, regardless of the religion, is inherently evil and should never be tolerated whatever pretense and mask it tries to wear. You cannot and should not make the conceit that you are in someway superior to anyone else purely because of a religious belief you adhere to and certainly have no right to try and impose that belief on others against there will.

Lauren's summary above seams to sum up my views rather more succinctly than my own so my apologies for the rambling :-)

I think DigiCamMan goes a little far in saying the signs point to the antichrist being alive at the moment, (as I think Bush isn't as bad as people make him out to be). I don't believe the end-times will be here until after the rapture, which the bible clearly mentions in Revelation.

I find this all rather amusing. Last night I was flipping the tale. And Came across the TBN network. You know trinity broadcasting network. There were a group of ministers and staff waving envelopes filed with money stating that the only way to salvation is through the donation of the all mighty dolor. Stating that if you donate you will be cured of cancer, impudence, and all other ailments. Amassing how it takes a buck to get the attention of God. I thought that is was ironic that it was a final push during the final day of tax filing for the USA internal revenue service. I was amassed at how blatant they were. Then consider that the Catholic Church is the most powerful entity in the world and richer then any nation could ever be.

I’m not saying the hell to religion, is a tool for explaining the unexplainable and the world system of psychological stability. But I will say that any thing that mankind is involved in will most certainly become corrupt.

I personally don't agree with the Catholic church on much. To me, they are corrupt, too powerful, and too ritual-oriented. I am a Baptist, so I don't agree with the Catholic tenet of working one's way to heaven by doing good deeds. Lets face it, even if everyone in the world did good deeds to 'fix' what they had done wrong, people would still be doing wrong things, and thus I see this as quite pointless.

The only place to go if you believe in that sort of thing is heaven. Hell and Satan was a creation of the Christians. Satan was none existent until they got a hold of the scripture.

Could be this thread, but while Caedes is a large population, I don' think it is the cause!

:-)

However I agree with Phil...Faith not religion should be the "power" (for lack of a better word) to drive us. Faith in my mind, is the thing that builds bridges, while religion tends to tear them down. Wars are fought on behalf of religions, faith is what sends people to the warzones to rebuild.

Someone lightly suggested that I may think Bush is the antichrist. Homer Simpson would have a better chance. Bush has a place in history and that is to bring this country into line for global government or destroy it. One of those things will happen. Want my take on it go here: http://hometown.aol.com/jne3125114/Page1.html

Perhaps all of the above is a moot point-given the earth is warming to a point that in 200 years or so, it will be largely uninhabitable.....one will either be dead or on the way: the answers to many questions will be answered on the deathbed--all will be revealed; i suspect one just goes away.....to nowhere but the cosmos as a mote of dust (forget the bioblical connotation; I do not mean to imply it.)

Phillippe I am surprised you would wait that long for something to be revealed. Generally speaking that is the point of no return...what if?

You are generous with your 200 year calculation. Haven't you noticed the acceleration that has taken place. Now it will accelerate even faster...maybe even before you get to that death bed. There is a certain generation that will see the end....I think we be them.
