This is an issue I have noticed for quite some time. I was just curious why this seems to happen to me, or if it happens to others as well. Sometimes, I'll send someone a pm, I can see that they're online, but after an hour or so I still receive no reply. I know people aren't always at their pc's, or are sometimes busy with something else. The thing is many times, after an hour and a half or so, my friend will finally send me a pm saying "sorry I didn't reply earlier, I just received your message". Is there some sort of lag between sending pm's? I'm just wondering, because at times it can be very frustrating. If so, is anybody working on a solution for this problem?
In fact, sometimes the PM's sent don't show up until the next day for me. A recent example; the PM was sent according to the time stamp at approximately 6:30 p.m, and I was on later that evening, say 10 and on. I swear I didn't see anything until the following morning when I logged onto the site; another time that I will take notice if the "You've Got Mail!" thing is happening.
Time stamps period seem to slightly out of whack. Posts on the discussion boards, last time on the site noted on profiles, to name the other occurrences. So ... no, you are not alone on this.
Now, having said that ... I am unaware at times when some PM's have been sent, as I either truly do not take notice (usually it is only when I am awaiting a reply do I monitor it more closely) ... or I haven't refreshed the pages in my cache.
The other thing, although I am not sure of the time frame, is that although it may show ("show users online") that someone is on ... there is a delay in the system between logging out and de-listing you from the users online feature. Just an f.y.i. .
Additionally, the problem of someone not noticing the ones you have sent could be a function of their settings in I.E.. For example, you can have I.E. set to check for a 'newer version' of the web page every visit to that page, automatically or never. That could account for some of the problems you are encountering with people not 'promptly' receving your PM's.
or it could be like me who gets side tracked messing around with apop or photos and realises that there is a message there.. or I have a really bad habit of not logging out... but i know what you mean i have had messages that have a time eg. 6.30am which appears after a received 9.30am message...
I was just curious, it seems to happen a lot to me lately. It's very frustrating when you really want to speak to someone soon, but have to wait hours instead of minutes.
Ok, that explains part of the mystery, but, is Lauren in the middle east or something? Lol.
Serious, that example I used was in fact Laurens' and if I am in the Eastern Time Zone like you Cat, Lauren is?? Really, my brain doesn't process this stuff so well.
I do understand what you said about timestamps and the geographical/time zone aspect, as I have received a few PM's from those across the pond and even further into Europe and good ol' Australia. And these were certainly stamped, somewhat accordingly.
They speak some kind of weird moonman language, as well as, their time being off from ours, you know. (Kidding, kidding.)
Whoa - me too! I don't get replies after two weeks even if I PM people when they are online. It's been happening for almost a month. Also my Friends' list has been giving trouble (sometimes the images don't show up in Jobs when my Friends upload a new image) I PMd a mod three weeks ago about this, and got no reply. Then a week ago I PMd another mod and got a reply saying I should add the Friends again (it seems to work pretty well) and that maybe the people get behind. About the time zone, I get fast replies from people who live in Europe but not from the US sometimes.
I would say that just because it shows a person online doesn't really mean they're online. I sign onto the site but I never logout so I would say that my status would always be online, even when I'm not here and at work or at the store. Zat make sense?
I also think the "Users online list" shows the users that were online during the last 5 minutes (or some similar period). Chances are good that you could just have missed someone by a few seconds or so.
Also from a non-broadband availability point of view - I generally tend to have access only on certain days of the week... so it might take a day or two before I can get back to PM's. That might also possibly be the case for others as well.
I guess one of the main problems I have is, for instance I'm usually online between 6 am and 6:30 am berfore I leave for work. I never get a pm, then later on after work, usually after 5 pm I'll receive a pm that was supposedly sent to me at 6:05 am. I don't get it, if it was sent at that time and I was online at the same time how come I don't receive the pm until several hours later. It's just not right..=(
We're just ignoring you Larry!! Don't you know that by know??
I'm not supposed to say, but, we've set up a special club...the "rj51 he-man--womans hater club"...hey, the name wasn't my idea. Anyway, when you PM someone...pretty much anyone on Caedes...well. this is hard to say, but,...we just ignore you for 3 1/2 hours.
Because the timestampt on the PM isn't in your timezeon, it is in the senders. Any delay that you see with PMs is excusivly due to the person not immediately sending a reply. The PM that you send immediately is put in they Jobs box, so there is no technical limitation for the delay.
It basically boils down to the fact that the PM system is not meant to serve as instant communication. If you need instant feedback then your should use the chatroom or call them on the phone.
Okay, I see, but some people are clear around the world. I don't think I could pay my phone bill if I had to pay for all those calls. Thanks for clearing things up anyway Caedes..=)
Call'em on the phone? Do we's have a directory for that?
~dialing...RJ51~ No answer, dang!
Was my previous post correct G? I log on and don't log out...I'm at work, the store or at the park, playin' fetch with Charlie...does it still show me as "logged in"?
LOL. I just tried a little experimenting with both my laptop and my dad's, and when I logged off on mine, my dad's laptop still showed I was online. So I think KJ is right about the users online during the last 5 mins (or something like that).
