How did I suddenly get many copies of my own photos in my personal file?

I hope someone can help me with this. For some suddenly reason in my personal photo file suddenly I have anywhere from 3 to 16 copies of photos! I have no idea how or why this began. I had posted a pic to caedes and then I shut the pc down. I came back to it a while later and saw all those "copies" Does anyone know how this happens? and what I can do about it??? Please?

You probably saved your file 16 times in photoshop, or whatever program u use, when you shut it down.
Or, you accidentally pressed ctrl+A and ctrl+V 16 times =P
Or, your a caedesian and saved your file 16 times just to be safe
...or you have a mac.

Honestly, im also befuddled.

Caedes is so much fun! It has little blue buttons, and they even turn green! ...other features include posting images, but who cares about that part. Blue buttons!

I didnt save my file that many times. But I do know one thing..my husband made a CD of the last set of photos I took with my Nikon Digital, the one of the horses etc. And that is the ONLY set of photos that has made that many copies. I took each of the copies and moved them one by one to the recycle bin. THen I left the pc for a few moment, shut down the photo file of mine. Turned it back on...and there were NEW copies of those same photos suddenly! What in heck is happening? I just dont get it. YEsssss Keifer where are you???!! HELP!!

Sounds to me like the temporary file which it made to copy to the CD is still hanging around or something?

when your husband made the CD .. it's possible that he selected all of them and then began to drag them to a new folder or location and stopped halfway and changed his mind and the images copied themselves to the same folder ... but all of the duplicate images would be called copy of .. ...

so you would have all your DSC000's .. and you would have copy of DSC000 .. above it (alphabetically)

I would never assume that YOU made an error when sending them to the recycle bin

;o)

Can't you just delete the copies?

I deleted all the copies, and when I came back they were all there again! Really weird! If it were a virus I think it would have affected all of my photo file, not just one set of them . I just checked again, and some of have up to 12 copies made on there. But none of my other photos have the problem. I feel it must have had something to do with him making the CD, since thats the only set of photos it happened to. Keep giving me ideas please, so I can figure this out. I will try to check into the temporary folder about that too. Thanx to all..

but .. are they labeled "copy of .. " ... or .. are they the exact same name, which would ordinarily be impossible on a windows system

They all say "copyof" and then it give a number..such as copy 12 of...etc...some have four our five copies and some up to 16. How do I go to temp files to look into them? I have some severe family emergencies going on right now and cant seem to remember how to do some stuff on the ol' pc...so help would sure be appreciated...

I have VERY good virus protection, and a virus would not just take ONE batch of photos out of thousands and attach only them. It happened only to the last bunch of pics we took...about 24 of them I guess and like I said, my hubby put them on a CD and since that is the only time we've done that, it must be related somehow. I really have outstanding virus protection, and have not gotten a virus, especially not on just a small segment of a huge file...that would make no sense. I think it might have to do with TEMP files, but I gotta get into them first...weird stuff.

verena, it's entirely possible that you did get a virus and it is affecting ONLY the one folder. it's effects may be limited to the root name/path of that folder.

no matter how good your protection is, there's always some jerk around the corner who thinks it's fun to find a way around it

oh dear .. the virus is spreading to her posts on Caedes .. soon there will be 16 testimonials to the veracity of her virus knowledge

when you said you "logged off" your computer .. did you mean you powered down completely? .. or just let your PC go into standby mode

(*looks around for MAC users*) .. sometimes powering off completely will fix odd occurences

when you burn a CD .. the software creates an ISO file .. which is an image of the CD to be burned .. think of it like a .zip file of the 100 images (or whatever) that you burned to the CD .. the files don't exist in "loose" form to be copied, somehow, back to the originating folder ... so .. I'm thinking that looking for some kind of TEMP file isn't going to bear fruit

quiz your husband on his exact process for creating the CD .. did he drag files to another folder? .. did the CD get burned accurately, (the files are there)?

most software supports drag+drop for this sort of thing .. it's even touted as a recommended process .. but if you don't pay attention to what you're doing you can accidently create "shortcuts to" instead of actual copies

for example .. go into "windows explorer" .. open a folder that contains photos .. click on a photo and (without letting go of the mouse button) .. drag it to another folder .. hover your mouse over that folder and press the "control" key .. notice the plus sign attached to the pointer? .. that means you will COPY the file and it will still exist in the original location

now .. while still hovering over the destination folder .. press the "alt" key .. notice the "shortcut" symbol (little arrow) attached to the pointer .. this means that you will create a shortcut to the original and all that will be created in the destination folder is a 1k text file that points to the original 500k photo

also .. when dragging a file to the originating HardDrive (if you have several) .. will default to a MOVE (ie = the original file is deleted after the COPY) ... if you drag to a different HardDrive .. the default action is a COPY (notice the little plus sign attached to the mouse pointer) .. this default action can be over-ridden by pressing the SHIFT key (making the plus sign disappear = resulting in a MOVE)

are there going to be brownies after this?

I just wanted to let everyone know that what I finally ended up doing was to drag and drop them all into a new desktop file folder and I left them there. And since I did that, there have been no more copies. Long ago I heard of people having that happen with their music files, and some of them did the same thing, by putting them into a file folder on their desktop, and it worked for them, so I figured I would try it, and it did work. Then in time they dumped the whole folder and so I will do that eventually too. But thanx to all of you for your ideas...Chocolate? ok I'll be bakin 'em for all of ya....
