Standing out.....Anything that "Stands out" in a setting or scene. Something different than the rest of the objects in the image. Example......a Yellow duckling in a crowd of brown ducks. This could also pertain to fractals or any other genre.
Well, gonna try here ... and I am not trying to throw water on anyone's ideas or choices for topics.
"Vertical".
I am not sure, Ron ... if you are actually referring to a 'theme' per se ... as opposed to that of a format of presentation? (Portrait versus landscape orientation, to be clear.)
'Cause any theme or topic could be approached and presented in a portrait format. Sure, some subject matter may very well lend themselves better to one or the other.
That said ... care to clarify?
As inevitably, should yours rise to the top, there will be questions along the lines of 'what exactly does this theme/concept/topic refer to?'
"HDR".
Again, not a topic or theme per se, in my mind. More of that of a technique employed/applied.
And this one might very well preclude some genres or other types of art. Let alone, the photographers that do not have access to the appropriate software.
Anyone care to jump in on this note and explain how this theme/topic/concept ... can be readily adapted to other genres and/or ... free software that may be available, etc.?
HDR Is not photography,a process done after alot of people an members don't use it or have access to it either,I dont feel this subject should be concidered, My opinion
..lol.. @ the reaction of Stan /\ Nothing wrong with flowers :o)
But there are enough flowers in the New Images Gallery everyday, so no macro pictures of flowers allowed this time!
So time for a new challenge...in my humble opinion that is... a macro picture of daily things, just look around you there are a lot of subjects that are perfect for that kind of pictures:oD
*whispers, (before she leaves the building) ....it was my idea*
Have to agree with Stan and Twinkel. Flower are great for Macro shots, but there are just soo many of them on here.
I also have to agree HDR should not really be on here. It's a process that some don't use. Or..if like me, gets tired of seeing it. I think that sometime HDR can make the photo look worse.
Just my humble opinions. Also curious what the union contest would be about.
"A principle of art, unity occurs when all of the elements of a piece combine to make a balanced, harmonious, complete whole. Unity is another of those hard-to-describe art terms but, when it's present, your eye and brain are pleased to see it."
'Better' explanation (with pictures in the links! :oD):
"Classic design theory discusses unity in terms of the objects present in a piece of art. Regarded in this way, unity discusses the need to tie the various elements of a work of art together. Unity is a measure of how the elements of a page seem to fit together - to belong together. A unified work of art represents first a whole, then the sum of its parts."
/\ In the above link, clicking on "Create Unity through Scale and Proportion" (bottom of page) will bring up another consideration and examples using scale and proportion.
It is known that there is an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination.
Okay Twinks. I understand what you are getting at. There are alot of things to do with macro and flowers are just but one. I kind of like the sepia idea too though.
We did light and shadows not long ago, so why call it something else, Chiaroscuro, and do it again. Sorry, yawn. Vertical, there was a lot of Vertical in the last competition, Lines, again, so why repeat. Also, like lines was open to any picture with a line in it, so vertical will be open anything with a vertical element. It is too easy. I am with Les and Union.
Voted for jiaroskurio :)), it interested me last time so lets get it out of the way this time. I'd point out that with this new context process there is plenty of opportunity, over time, for pretty much any topic to get voted up, particularly if one person consistently promotes it's value here and convinces the rest of us about, as was done for sheerascusoiak between last time and this time. Some people like their themes ambiguous, others like them pretty concrete, plenty of room for both kinds of topics to be contested now. Kudos to C for another excellent enhancement of the site and the commmunity.
Mikel.
Well, since Union would seem to be a wasted vote, perhaps we could just get Chiaroscuro out of the way. It is at least a little more thought provoking than Vertical.
Ok... just for you Elizabeth! Les... no reading past this point in this comment!
'I can't see clearly now' could involve rain, fog, a shot through special glass, Photoshop de-enhancement perhaps... anything that shows reduced clarity of vision (or perhaps some portion of it.) :o)
... or any other element thought-up by us that implies not seeing clearly!
... but at the same time gives us an interesting image to enjoy!
I admit... I don't know how this would affect the 'Graphics Artists' here but they can speak for/against the idea... without voting for it [it might be helpful if they would do this for each topic rather than having us (camera users) making unenlightened decisions.] Heck! With the number of contests happening here, it might even be feasible to have a contest 'for them! only' and a contest 'with no regard considered for tools used'. ?¿¿?¿?¿?¡! Heck! Maybe even alternate between them... that could give some of us a little break between our type of contests¡¿!? Just doing the unthinkable... a little thinking! :o)
I agree with ::Stevenn120 on hdr. Many of us don't have the software or even ever used it although I love what can be done with it. I like Twinkels' idea as well as any other here. How about combining 2 or 3 art principles into one theme such as: form and value, texture and space, rhythm and balance, contrast and variation.....etc:):)
TWO things at once!!!!! Mein Gott!!!!!!!!! I get giddy at the very thought. I've only just worked out which bit of glass on the camera I'm supposed to stick my eye up to. TWO things...I'm feeling faint........
Yes Les! You do have *%&^##%)*_)! I hope the vaseline helps some in reading that... in case you have already removed it... a great sense of humour! :o) And I love the use of the vaseline... "or any other element thought-up by Les that implies not seeing clearly!" :o)
John... I just noticed your little Edit:... yes, Chiaroscuro fruit should be a go! That was the first example I found when searching for the meaning... an apple or perhaps a pear hanging by a thread with light coming from the upper side, kinda similar to the ball example found later. Actually... even any dark picture with some light in it would do as a valid entry, from other examples found... but what it takes to be a WINNER!? Best idea is to have fun! :o)
Personally, I think that having a "Chiaroscuro" contest right after a "Lines" contest has to be insane, especially because it wasn't all that long ago a light & shadows contest was done..... but if you photographers like to do the same basic thing over & over....whatever. Go for the gold. *shrugs*
I voted Macro, NOT Flowers even though I know it's a lost cause. Because if you're going to photograph something imho, do it from a different angle please, not the endless lines & shadows, thank you very much.
I guess I totally agree with Laurengary...Macro would have been wonderful. And I have no clue to what Chiaroscuro really is. Is it related to the Chia pet????!! lol Gosh I'm laughing at what mythmaker wrote...hehe, cute. Sorry, but I simply cannot figure out what the heck this Chiaroscure means!! Any simple explanation to be found anywhere????????? V
I agree, a wonderful example by nigelmoore...and Lori (tealeaves) did provide a link above showing some examples and a description of Chiarascuro...actually the last 'light & shadows contest' was just a little challenge by Mimi & me and I think a google search might also help make the distinction of different tyes of lighting and shadow in an image.
You're right, I'm thinking of that. However, there was a Light & Shadows contest in the past. But you're absolutely right about the challenge. I still think though that a Chiarascuro contest on top of a Lines Contest is a bit much, but I realize I'm beating a dead horse here.
So, I'll give it a rest & just say that I'm looking forward to seeing all the wonderful entries.
I like to think of chiarascuro as a subtle passion of the engagement of light and shadow, of warmth and coolness, a conflicted play on the visual senses. Basically, chiarascuro is a delicate visceral and emotional pattern that draws the eye of the beholder. Think of the infinite tones of grey, but then drawn into an emotional spectrum of shadowed colors, elicitng emotion and irony.
I am wondering why I recieved an invitation to enter this contest? The way things are I dont recieve comments on what I post. Thank you for the invitation any way
the light and shadow contest was 6 years ago according to the entries so a little more than 'not long ago' and as chiarascuro is much more than just simply representing light and shadow - i.e. creating three dimensional depth to an image by using the light - it definitely is more of a challenge. don't really see the repetition or clash with curves though - certainly no more so than having lines and symmetry within a few weeks of each other followed swiftly by suggestions for curves and verticals....
<Added Sunday> Chiaroscuro Fruit?
