This is why I was parked by the side of that lonely old road in the photo I posted for the contest. Flint Hills ranch land at it's finest. In a few days, when the weather is calm, this prairie will be set alight, and that fire will enable this land to beoome a beautiful sea of green grass in just a matter of days. And life on the prairie will roll on, much as it has for thousands of years.

Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have any film.

Larry, you mean to say that the whole field with all the animals big and small and smaller and the smallest will be set on fire on purpose or accidentally?
This is a beautiful image, great wisdom but I do not quite understand that bit of intro referring to burning.

Marzena, these prairies have been set on fire either by natural means (lightning strikes) or man for as long as there have been prairies, it is the natural way to rejuvinate it. Animals big and small that live on this priarie have evolved with such fires and know how to avoid them. Cattle and horses are removed before burning areas where they are kept. Burning is usually done ahead of rain storms or at night when there is no wind, so it can be easily controlled. It is much like forest fires renew the forests in some parts of the world, just a different ecosystem.
