For in and out, above, about, below,
'Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show,
Play'd in a Box whose Candle is the Sun,
Round which we Phantom Figures come and go.
From Edward Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
For those folks not familiar with Kansas history, in the pioneer days of the state lumber for building almost anything was as hard to come by as hens teeth. Consequently the settlers, having to substitute their building materials found something plentiful under the ground. Parts of Kansas is virtually peppered with limestone quarries. Having gone through Kansas only twice I've seen a number of structures built of limestone slabs just like this structure. In north central Kansas there's even a rural historic district, northwest of Ellsworth, consisting of fields fenced in with limestone fence posts. Close observation of the posts show drill marks where the posts were removed from the quarry. The slabs forming the walls of this old home, Laura, are pretty closely chinked. Whoever built it knew there business, certainly one reason it's lasted this long. Good job and good luck in the contest.
Still have many active limestone quarries around today. And houses such as above are not uncommon around this country, I know of many myself. They always make me wish I could hear the stories they could tell.
This was truly built to last, Laura!... well, at least part of it :) There is beauty in this old structure, and I believe others would agree... else it would have been long gone. I really like how you composed it, with the trees on either side, and that open window up above! :) A wonderful contest entry! Best of luck my friend! :)
