Missed Opportunity

This was photographed sometime last summer. The feeder hangs from a shed in the backyard and is popular with the hummingbirds. That is until I decide to try and photograph them. Then they all disappear in the blink of an eye and I might as well be trying to get a photo of an albatross feeding at the darn thing. Probably have better luck come to think of it.

This is one of my many missed opportunities. I've tried shooting from inside the house through a window. But that don't work too well. I end up with the dreaded glare off the glass and we all know how big of a "pane" that is. I have even staked the place out from outside, camping out beneath it. Of course maybe that's part of the problem, and still no luck. Maybe next year I'll set up camp a little further back or disguise myself as a flower. I just hope the petals don't make me look fat. Something has to work sooner or later. Until then I'll have to be satisfied with a photo of the feeder.

Hope you enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Well what can i say then!Nice colour, good detail and it would have been great if and i say if there was a bird there.Try putting some sweet liquid in the feeder and not water. But saying that i think i can see a black hummingbird on the lift side of the picture. You do make us laugh my friend.

Very amusing but so sad Wendell about the birds that is. Please promise us a picture of you in your flower costume - I'd pay to see that! LOL As far as the glare, I had good results at the zoo last month using a circular polarizing filter - I didn't detect any glare in my shots through the glass. I'll probably post some in January.

Be sure to empty it before it freezes. You should have used a faster speed because I can't even see the hummingbird.

This I really would love to see: you in this way with a entire family of hummigbirds surrounding you!!! lol

...even so your arrangement is beautiful and the photo well made, Wendell.

Hi, Wendell....

Your shot is well focused and has great color. I see that you use food coloring in your hummingbird food. I have found that the red dye does nothing to attract the hummingbirds. I make my own sugar water by boiling the water so that you can add the proper amount of sugar. From my high school chemistry classes I learned that the boiling water allows you to mix a higher percentage of solids. Sort of like Jello.

Anyway, I've found that the hummingbirds (around here at least) are extremely territorial. The male birds stake out the feeder and keep other birds away. They have a cease fire near sunset so that everyone gets full before they bed down for the night.

The birds are very sensitive to movement. If you stand very still a foot or so away from the feeder, the hummingbirds eventually will accept you and think that you're just a tree or something. So if you're willing to stand there for a few minutes without making too many quick movements, you can get some excellent shots.

Roger

P.S. Nice shot.

Wendell - Bypass the flower costume; next summer try dressing up as a bird feeder! Try setting up the tripod and camera with lens focused on the feeder, and using a cable shutter release (to allow for a comfortable position while standing still and waiting for the opportunity). Put the camera on burst mode, as the shutter sound will likely frighten off the bird. Dems my two cents of advice, (offered at no cost to you). Thad
