I was out in the yard the other day hanging a new door on one of the sheds. I wish it had been just as easy as simply hanging the door on the shed, but apparently there is some work involved in leveling it out so it swings just right on the hinges. So I'm working along when I hear this knocking sound. I thought it was a bit odd as I wasn't using a hammer and the last time I looked a screwdriver shouldn't be making a knocking sound, if it is you are using it wrong. Well then I thought maybe it was one of them traveling salesmen who saw a new door on his route and just had to try it out. Or maybe it was the neighbour come to "borrow" yet another tool. So I got to thinking Who can it be now? and decided I had better answer the knock. After all it could have been opportunity at the door.

Upon investigating the area I discover this fellow doing some construction work of his own. He was doing quite the job with his hammer drill boring holes in this tree. So I run to the house to grab my camera and spent the next several minutes photographing this odd jobber at work on his masterpiece. I think he was going for some abstract piece of art, which I won't begin to understand just enjoy, it should be interesting to see what he ends up with. 120+ odd photos later I return to my own work as darkness was fast approaching as was mealtime and unlike my feathered friend I can't work and eat at the same time.

Hope you enjoy and your comments welcomed.

It is really clear Wendell. They do have that rat-a-tat-tat sound. The song fit the shot. I think you could have presented this vertically and done away with some of the empty space on the right. Just my opinion.

Wow, he is crystal clear Wendell - I agree with Tick that a little chop on the left may have concentrated the viewer to the bird more quickly but I really like this catch.

Excellent narrative, Wendell. I agree with the comment above from VFS-TicK - Except that I believe the stuff on the left should have been cropped out which is what I believe VFS-TicK meant when he said "some of the empty space on the right" as there is no empty space on the right. I am in awe of the beautiful detail and the perfect depth of field.

Beautiful focus on the woodpecker. I think you could crop it from either side to achieve the rule of thirds and make the composition a little more balanced. I'd love to get that close to one of these guys.

a Beautiful noisy Harry Woodpecker! These guys are much more decorated out your way so this mean they are a lot more louder as well I guess. I do agree you could have cropped some but Its pretty obvious that the focus is on the woodpecker.
Great shot

Wendell enjoy your picture of the woodpecker but most of all your narrative very nicely done.

Fantastic shot Wendell - I love to see and hear woodpeckers but they can be a problem because they will use their skills on whatever they choose. Cute that You heard him knocking when You were installing a new door.

Hi Wendell,
Stunning shot. Crystal clear picture. The space on the left side give more depth on the picture and make the bird it more expressive.
Thanks for sharing!

Great capture. Your color and resolution are perfect.
These guys are tough to caputre. They never stop for
very long and usually move to the back side of the tree.
