I was working on the computer one evening a couple of weeks back when I heard the sound of sirens spill into the air. I didn't pay it much mind as the fire hall is just down the road and they are always flying off responding to some call or other at odd hours. It wasn't until I looked out the window a few minutes later that I realized they were responding to a fire just down the street. Shows how observant I am. A local auto body shop had caught fire in the middle of the night. Nobody was there at the time and the fire was contained to one part of the building, but they still haven't re-opened since the fire.

By the time I grabbed the camera and got outside, the fire was pretty much out; no dramatic flame scenes were to be had. So I took some shots of the smoke and steam filling the air for lack of anything else to do.

The post editing reduced the red glare from the engine lights and brought out the blue-green of the traffic lights that I hadn't noticed before. I smoothed out as much of the noise as I could and tried a bit of sharpening to reduce the blur.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Interesting shot. Just my opinion, but maybe crop out some of the black to lead the eye more to the colors in the smoke.

Lucky there was no one there Wendell. A local man was working in his shop when his overalls caught on fire from something he was welding and he was burned over 90 per cent of his body. His nephew saw him and rolled him in the snow to cool him down. He is still in the burn unit. It was a terrible thing.
Your photo displays the power.

A very interesting posting, Wendell. I'm not used to seeing night time images from you. I like the natural border of foliage although it's a bit thicker than I personally would have tried. There's no noise and the sharpness is pretty good; so you have me beat by a mile (ok - kilometer). I like the colors but think you should have cloned out the vehicles, power poles and lines and that bush in the center foreground.

In reading between the lines, Wendell, I hear you loud and clear that you are confessing to starting that fire. I know you go to great lengths to get a shot. Maybe I'll try the same thing at the local oil refinery.

Dots

P.S. Quite a happy story from TicK, don't you think?

I'm not afraid of dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Super well done photo of this disaster, a beautiful image of the disaster through your lenses so to say... I would only crop out a bit more the black part bellow, Wendell. I am glad was nothing more serious and that the fire did not came until your home! :-)

Wow! All that drama! Amazing how something such as a disaster can still have so much color...expecially at night.

Additional thought. I too thought about maybe removing wires and poles - but I think they add to the chaos of the scene and are important in this shot.

Even though the fire was over your photo stills conveys a strong sense of emergency. It's well framed and I think the haywire branches silhouetted in the center actually contribute to a sense of excitement. It's a compelling capture. Well done.
