This would be Phineas. I recently had a new roommate move in. He seemed like a decent enough fellow and said he was in the pest control business. A respectful enough way to earn a living I thought, if not a bit icky. What he failed to mention was that he was also an amateur musician favouring the percussion section. Well it wasn't long before his hidden talent came to the fore. And shortly after that came the calls, messages and letters to cease and desist from the neighbours. Phineas would spend every spare moment at his craft banging the drum slowly before building to a crescendo of what many considered to be a cacophony of noise. Often from early morning to nightfall on his day's off work. But, old Phin, he would just laugh at their complaints. While it can be irritating at times my hands are tied as he signed multi-year lease, so I can't very well kick him out on the street, though I might well break his drumsticks.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

Wendell - Ask any parent whose child played drums - get your roomie a rubber pad on which to practice his trade. It's much quieter and improves relations with the neighbors immensely. Unless, of course, there is a neighbor to which you wish to return past favors. ;-) You had to be quick to get this woodie, as they don't stay still for long, and they often get high enough among branches that they are hard to photograph. You got a good one here. Thad

If I could tell the story in words, I wouldn't need to lug around a camera. ~Lewis Hine

Hi, Wendell...

When I saw the title, I naturally assumed that you were speaking about the typical critiques on the bulk of your postings. Love the narrative and I can tell that this was no easy shot. As Thad said, these little guys don't like to sit still and pose for photographers unless you pay them supermodel salaries. And I can see that he's not very comfortable out in the open. I'm wondering what you were doing in the Amazon rainforest for the undergrowth looks intense. You were lucky to get this shot unless you've done some superlative cloning. It's interesting as I study this posting to note that the only thing that is well focused in the entire image is the woodpecker's head. My natural assumption is that you were stumbling in the same direction as his head was moving and fired off a lucky shot as you hit the ground. However, you did it...luck or cloning, this one's just excellent. Congrats on a wonderful posting.

Your narrative was priceless Wendell. Cost of Woodpecker banging on drums all night-just a precious few hours sleep.
They are difficult to capture in a photo, but you have done very good.

Great shot and to me it looks like a Pilated Woodpecker, never heard of the Phineas or is this just the name you gave him?
