Seriously these things will chew your eyes out, or maybe it's sew them shut... No, wait that's dragon flies that do that...Okay, now I remember, these things like to tap dance wearing army boots on tin roofs in the middle of the night so you can't get a decent nights' sleep...Sorry that's elephants that do that...Maybe they reach for things on tall shelves for other insects...

Okay so maybe I don't know what these things do. I'd like to think they make an interesting photo subject. But then again so does a stain on the rug. Not that I have any stained rugs to photograph, but if I did chances are I'd be photographing them. Note to self, find some stained rugs, posthaste.

Seriously, an insect of the flying variety. Though every time I've seen them they're always parked on some leaf or down on the grass. Makes me question their claim to being a flying insect.

Enjoy and your comments welcomed.

P.S. I finally figured out what this critter does. This long-legged fellow works in the construction industry as a crane operator. Who'd have thunk. Ain't nature wonderful.

I knew when I saw the title it was going to be some creepy critter - don't know what it is either but I do know it is an excellent shot!

Great shot of this long-legged insect. He sure has different lengths to his legs. I'm glad it's at your place.

Actually they chase Grandmammy Long Legs Wendell. They won't settle for anything else. No Praying Mantis for these Grandaddies.
Cool shot.
They even made a movie with Fred Astaire about one of them.

Wendell....

We have a zillion of these buggers here on the Central Coast. They are crane flies and are in the order Diptera along with other common flies. The variety we get here are suicidal pests. After sunset they buzz the exterior lights at the house and just wait for me to open the door so that they can bounce along the florescent lighting in the kitchen. Either I swat 'em with my fly swatter or just let them be if I'm tired enough. Whatever it is that draws them to the kitchen lighting does not serve to sustain them. Apparently these odd creatures need food and water as well as bright lights.

Hilarious narrative. My mother to this day still believes that dragonflies will sew your eyes shut. You can see where I got my inquisitive mind, thirst for knowledge and sub-primate level I.Q.

Very nice effort on your shot. You ran into the same problems as my shots of the crane fly. It's awfully difficulty to get a clearly focused close up and keep their legs in the shot. Of course, all of my shots of crane flies are useless because their hanging upside down from the brightest lights in the house. Note to self: Wait until one dies, place it on a suitable background (like my brother's face) and take a picture that's not overexposed backlighting.

The reason why the sun sets in the evening is because it wants to see the sunrise in the morning. I rise in the morning because I want to see them both. RvdB

I've always heard it said not to "drink and narrate" at the same time but you just had to go against the norm didn't you Wendell?? I also feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know the difference between a dragonfly, an elephant and what you've got here but I'll go easy on ya bud:):) A cool shot of this............thing:):)

Wendell
Out here we call them Mosquito eaters. They have fire breath and retractable adamantium claws...we try and give them a wide berth whenever we see them. They do like to just hang around dont they? Nice image and description of this dangerous flying insect!

Seriously some insects have no use other than to bounce along the ceiling while my cat tries to talk them down from the floor untill I just go get it for her.
