[part I] [part II] [part III] [part IV] [part V] . . .We arrived back in the cavern where we had first met the entity who had volunteered us to perform this task. Empty. There we were, holding some kind of contraption that contained what the entity referred to as the source of life on earth wondering, what next? We waited hoping that our bizarre friend had eluded the being that we retrieved the sphere from. Tator and Lil PJ sat, stunned by the events that led us here. Mike vanished and returned just moments later (having left to post another fractal, much to the dismay of Lil PJ). Just when Mike finished explaining to Tator and Lil PJ how stories can be paused, our friend returned. “Now we must release the containment bonds of this sphere,” it said with urgency. Without delay, it swirled around the sphere engulfing the globe in its vibrant moving colors. Moments later it moved away to reveal a most beautiful ball of bright colors in concentric rings that hummed with energy. After just a few seconds, the ball floated to the top of the cavern and burst, fanning out in all directions, then was gone. We turned to our guest with an inquisitive look on our faces. “I will explain now,” it said sensing the many questions rolling through our minds. “Carbon you questioned. Carbon IS the source of all living things on this planet and many others. We are all carbon based creatures. When one life ends, the carbon is returned to the cycle of the earth to be used by the next. So it has been from the beginning. All matter on earth, including carbon, continuously cycles from one form to another since the beginning of the earth. To remove a large portion of carbon from this planet’s cycle would mean stealing life itself. The being you saw sought to return to its planet and add the stolen material to the cycle there unaware that it would be destroying the balance on both planets. So it had to be stopped and I couldn’t do it alone.” “Who are you,” I asked. I am the essence and spirit of the earth, known by many names and like the carbon, I have been here since the beginning of time,” it answered. It then glowed for a moment and dissolved, leaving me to explain all this to Tator, Lil PJ and the rest of the crew, and also left me with this tale to tell. Thanks for stopping by.

Neat ending. Nice twist on the idea of a "carbon footprint", too! Another good illustration to accompany the tale's conclusion. (Assuming it is the conclusion - sounds like it, but I don't wish to rule out sequels!)

It looks as though it is watching me, though. I do like that coppery colour.

I am honoured to be listed as a friend or to see an image of mine as a favourite, but I keep lists of neither. This helps me appreciate images uploaded by strangers as well as friends. Please understand that a failure to reciprocate in kind indicates a lack of appreciation for neither gesture nor work.
