A new Pileated in the yard this year :) I think that's what it is, anyway. Enjoy. Edit: As Doug mentions below, this one is not a Pileated as I thought. Thanks Doug.

I think it's a Red Headed Woodpecker, Mike. The Pileated has a longer beak and bigger body. The real difference is that this one pecks a rat a tat tat, and the Pileated makes a deep single pedk and there's quite a space between each peck, more like a a slow hammer. In any event, this is a nice shot.

I think Doug is right, but I don't think they are that common to spot for a shot. Very good capture of this woody. Tigs♥ =^..^=

Thanks, Doug. I believe you are right, I saw our resident Pileated in the back yard yesterday and he is quite a bit larger and the neck and head is shaped differently.

And thank you all for comments.

Emptiness is not nothingness. It is simply the opposite of full of it.

That is a Pileated. Be careful with size distinctions as they can be very misleading. I believe the bill looks smallish because her head (it's a female Pileated) is turned slightly to the right. Here's a wallpaper of a Red-headed Woodpecker. http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Infopage&image=bfrank-1371088820.jpg
