Here we have a Sapho Longwing (Heliconius sapho) from Costa Rica. Longwing butterflies are all distasteful, and Sapho is no exception. They advertise this fact with bright colors and slow flight. Longwing butterflies will utilize pollen as well as nectar for food. Pollen contains proteins which extend the life of the butterfly beyond the typical 2-3 weeks lifespan of tropical butterflies.

Only 2 or 3 weeks lifespan...wow:) Like the tour so far Randy..they are such delicate and beautiful creatures

Not so fast, Randy. Some of us lost our internet connection for the last 24 hours, and some of us can't get things to load on Caedes..wait for meeeee......this is great. I'm glad he doesn't taste good...more butterflies should be bitter if it makes 'em last longer ;)

Hello Randy...What a lovely shot of the beautiful butterfly....If you spray sugary water over the flowers the butterfly will be attracted and will stay aroun for a while giving you the time to photograph it....Well done....All the best....Mick.

Fantastic ! Glad you comment about the nature of the butterfly and how clever they evolve to taste rather 'icky' and using pollen nutritionally as this info is well beyond a random wikipedia search!
