The Northern Cardinal is a mid-sized songbird with a body length of 21-23 cm (8.3 to 9 inches). It has a distinctive crest on the head and a mask on the face which is black in the male and gray in the female. It displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is a vibrant red, while the female is a dull red-brown shade. The Northern Cardinal is mainly granivorous, but also feeds on insects and fruit. The male behaves territorially, marking out his territory with song. During courtship, the male feeds seed to the female beak-to-beak. A clutch of three to four eggs is laid, and two to four clutches are produced each year.

Beautiful capture hun! And I didn't know you were that smart..lol..I'm a cardinal lover myself (take after my mom). In fact, I think my dad is reincarnated and IS a cardinal! He's here all the time, and now that mom is gone she comes with him here too! Sounds strange to some I know, but it really seems like it. Anyway, great photo and excellent work!

Nice capture Randy, I like the pose and clarity, I would like it better if the branches were removed in the background. Good shot of our favorite bird.

Again thanks for the naming and the info. Nice shot and good background even with the branches, not to say that I will not take them off myself. 8-)
BTW, not sure if I like the frame, will see in the morning.

I like your dof very much. What a great feeling it must have been to capture one of these guys. Cardinals are one of my favorites too. In fact, my kids buy me things with cardinals on them for that reason. lol He's a lovely bird, Randy and you have a clear, close focus right on his little yellow eye.

How nice of you to give me SUCH a wonderful wallpaper dedicated to my state bird 'The Cardinal' - around here some folk add paprika to the feeders and if you can believe it, both sexes end up even redder than they are naturally! I like the offset of the framing a lot Randy - wonderful shot! ~Mary~
