The Randolph Family Cemetery Nottoway Plantation John Hampden Randolph 1813-1883 Emily Jane Liddell Randolph 1818 -1904 . When John Randolph died in 1883 , his entire estate was left to his wife Emily. Emily decided she could no longer stay at Nottoway without John . Nottoway was sold and Emily divided the money equally between herself and her Children . Legend has it on the last day in her beloved home , Mrs. Randolph dressed in black walked through the empty mansion and closed the shutters on each of the 200 windows. Emily returned to Nottoway , when she was laid to rest next to her husband John .

That's such a Tragically Beautiful story... I really Appreciate your Style, and your Willingness to divulge some Unknown (to Me!!) history with Each picture. Thank you for All your Efforts, Marsha!

I enjoyed it as well. It's not unusual for a spouse to want to sell the house...too many memories. But this was not just a house.

Tragic story and a good memorial to this couple who were once so happy together.

From historical point of view: a very interesting, but, to a certain extent, sad story, Marsha.

From photographic point of view: most images of statues, sculptures, and so on, have a lack of contrast because they are grey and have a grey or blue sky as backdrop. This one however is a good exception, because you've used the dark branches of the tree as your backdrop. An inventive solution, resulting in a good image. Well done.

Regards, Cornelius.

Excellent balance in this comp Marsha - as Cornelius said using the dark tree as a background really set up the shot - interesting narrative a swell.

My Mom was a Randolph, but our Monuments are a little smaller. I enjoy seeing old memorials. they are a link to our past.
