Cairo Illinois was once a thriving river town in Southern Illinois . It is the point where The Ohio meets The Mississippi. Cairo has been a ghost town for several years now , due to economics, crime, social and racial unrest. The population is now down to less than fifteen hundred people . Sad to say most of the old structures have fallen down and lay in the streets. A few have survived like The Art Bank , but for how long ? There has been government intervention trying to save the town. Who at one time had several blocks listed on the National Register Of Historic Places . In the May 2011 floods the Ohio rose above flood stage , the Army Corps Of Engineers breached levees in the Mississippi flood zone to save Cairo. Some wonder why they even bothered . It appears to little to late for this historic town. Dan and I are going to go back but we wonder if anything will still be standing.

Marsha, my husband is from far southern Illinois and we have been following the problems and crumbling of Cairo - this is a great shot and I know that building - your post work is terrific.

Excellent breakdown on the History of this Forgotten township, Marsha! I envy you and Dan the Opportunity to Visit and Photograph such an Opportunity!! I could spend a Week there, easily! I like the B&W treatment you Have rendered here... and the Lime highlights Bleeding through the Bricks!!

Marsha, your posting stands alone to tell the story, but your narrative is very good, and just adds more drama to this well captured image. Such a shame, to see such waste of this wonderful historic town. =^..^=tigs

This image says it all - It is a shame that a town is slowly turning into a ruin. Nice image Marsha - one that shows the state of the town.

Some people have Gurus, I have my camera. Through the cam lenses I have learnt to deeply perceive life, not only to see, but to look at all expressions of nature, becoming able to read the poetry of the flowers, receiving the embrace of the trees and flying above the clouds without wings! - Susie Sun

I got the feeling of this place being a 'war zone'. Otherwise, it's a photographers dream town, to wander about freely without fear of having your throat cut...

A sad story indeed that Cairo has become a ghost town and looks to be headed that way more and more. Interesting shot.
