I took this photo on New Year's Day 2011. To be honest I did not notice at the time how damaged the macrocarpa tree was but decided to keep it anyway - it is a brave tree. Many of its leaves are withered, some of its limbs have been severed and it has been battered by nature, but it survives. Kia kaha (Stay Strong) dear tree.

Like Christchurch, it's roots are deep and it's heart is strong. I join with many others whose message to the people of Christchurch is Kia Kaha. With your own resiliance and strength, together with the help of those who have arrived from around the world to assist and the continuing love and support of your own country you will survive this battering and the tremendous losses and destruction it has caused.
Ake, ake, kia kaha Christchurch - For ever and ever be strong.

Thank you for viewing, thank you for caring.

Lyn - I am always fascinated by the manner in which trees survive in the harsh setting of a coastline, constantly battered by wind, storms, and salt air; shape distorted, but heartily living. Your message for the people of Christchurch is beautiful. The simple composition of this image is its power. Well done! Thad

Kia Kaha is right LE. You photo, with the message added, is powerful. Lots of lessons to be learned and obviously you have.
The tree with the grasses and the sea as a backdrop is very well done.

I like the angle from which you have taken this photo Lyn. Great composition with the slope going down to the ea in this beautiful image.

It's quite a nice setting, Eve, and the weather worn character is most obvious. I think a much tighter proportionate crop, where the tree occupies more prominent space, effectively takes nothing from the surroundings.
The tree gains considerable impact as the prime subject, and all the complimentary subject material simply enhances it.
As it is now, you tend to see the tree first, but all the complimentary subjects draw your attention almost equally, and independently because there's so much space between each one.
Tough to explain without graphics. I'll send you an image.
The composition, camera angle etc, are perfect as usual. That's why it's so difficult to explain.

The tree has a wonderfully interesting shape despite its poor health. Simple subjects are often the best.

Very nice tribute indeed. I think that the people of New Zealand will stand as tall and proud as the macrocarpa tree, coming through the times of damage and hurt to emerge stronger. My thoughts are with all those affected.

A wonderful sentiment and a great photo, LynEve! I like the point of view you've chosen for this shot and the nice contrast between land and sea. The weathered macrocarpa tree makes a great subject, standing alone on the coastline and enduring the ravishes of the coastal weather. Well done!
